I own three of these units and have put them to good use over the summers. In the winter, I always kept them inside. To keep them from leaking, apply Teflon plumber's tape to all connections, including pipe joint seal (tube) on some joints, and replace the rubber washers. It functions satisfactorily, but the programming is insufficient for anything other than basic lawn watering. Outside of the programming, the only issue I've had is with one of the stops on a manifold valve breaking (plastic knobs). As long as you know which way is on and which way is off, the valve will continue to function. It's not going to work. It's a deal breaker, but it's also not a good sign of how long it'll last sitting in the sun, especially since it happened only a few weeks ago. Programming is simple because there are only three parameters to set: br>br> "start time" for up to three different cycles, a single "run time" per station/valve, and "how often" for all cycles and stations You can't choose which station runs in a cycle, nor can you set different times for different cycles, or (worst of all) different intervals/days for different stations OR cycles. br>br>For example, if you set station 1 to 5 minutes and station 2 to 10 minutes, they will run for those amounts of time each cycle and each day. This is probably fine for a yard; for a garden or a drip system, where hanging plants dry out faster and require twice daily but short watering, while vegetables require long watering three times a week, you can either water twice daily or three times a week and only for the set run time for each station. The only ones that don't leak and can be left outside all winter are these. I simply take the timer unit out and bring it in, then replace it in the spring. I've been using these for a long time and am very pleased with them. They are the only ones who can work with garden faucet taps with ball bearings and high pressure - All of the other sprinkler systems are prone to leaks and failure. There aren't enough words to express how wonderful these are! My only suggestion is that they add a module that allows them to be programmed using an iPhone app. Aside from that, they're flawless.
