These are cradles that are very thin and soft. They're not going to be able to keep a 35-pound melon from falling to the ground. I have 5 pound cantaloupes that are sinking into the ground. They are made of such a soft material that they cannot properly support anything; they should be made of hard plastic. I don't think they'll last more than a season or two at the most, and that's being generous. Here's where I'm going to go off on a rant. I'm sick and tired of businesses producing substandard goods in order to increase profits. Nobody appears to have any integrity these days. Having to create my own appears to be a recurring pattern for me. It's probably not a good thing that I'm 70 years old and recall a time when people made high-quality, long-lasting products.
These are unlikely to work for the intended purpose. They're flimsy and frail. I did manage to persuade them to keep my lettuce and herbs off the ground, though. And, after a few tweaks, they performed admirably for that purpose. Next to one of the spokes/ridges, I made a cut from the outside edge to the center. After that, just past the legs, cut out the inner circle. I then wrap them around my plants as soon as they've been transplanted. They'd probably be just as good with strawberries. Anything that had leaves on it that touched the ground was a no-no. For the past three years, I've been using the same set. I'm going to order a second set. Because they are unlikely to work as advertised, I gave them three stars.
We have raised garden beds in our yard. I purchased these to use with watermelons and pumpkins. The weight of a mini seedless watermelon in the raised bed will push the legs down into the dirt, so I use rough sand around and between our raised beds to keep the weeds at bay and make it easier to walk. When you put these on, they hold up well to the weight and keep them off the ground. The tiny toes do not even make contact with the ground. The legs may sink in soft soil or compost, negating the desired effect of being off the ground.
These melon cradles are extremely attractive and durable. They are keeping my watermelon and pumpkins off the ground. The price was reasonable, and the delivery was lightning fast! Thanks! UPDATE: The cradles weren't as sturdy as I had hoped once the melons and pumpkins began to grow, and they began to bend under the weight. Not as impressive as I had hoped. I should have waited longer with my review because I jumped the gun. As a result, I reduced my five-star rating to three.
I was worried that the plastic would become brittle and break during our hot 110-degree summer, but these did not. They took the weight of our melons and pumpkins, which weighed about ten pounds. If we got large gourd varieties, I'm sure you'd want to get rid of them after a certain weight. These cradles did an excellent job of keeping our gourds uniform and beautiful. It was also simple to clean and move them. They also wowed their neighbors.
Set the cradle on the ground and place the watermelon, pumpkin, or other melon on it for easy use. It is convex so that it conforms to the melon as it grows, has three short feet to keep it stable and level, and the feet have small holes in them so that a "spike" could be used to secure it to the ground if desired while it sits on the ground.
While searching for something else, I came across these and thought they were a fantastic idea. So far, they've done exactly what they're supposed to, and I've got plenty of squash in my garden. The color would be the only thing I would change. Why not paint them a smoky green to match the vines? The vivid blue stands out and attracts attention. I'm not sure why it was used in this way - except for the fact that it's a nice color for another product but not in my garden. That is why I have given these four stars.
The holders appear to be in good working condition. It keeps the vegetable from falling to the ground because it is held in place by the holder. I don't want to spend the money on all of the holders I require. I purchased two packs and will require at least four additional packs. Pumpkins, squash, and watermelon are abundant in this area.
