This was supposed to be a storage container for my melon. They're flimsy and can't fit small melons in them. Melons kept falling off because the stakes didn't go far enough into the ground. This product is unworthy of your money, and I do not recommend it.
I bought these for the exact reason stated in the title - to make a statement. to protect the melons from the elements as they ripen I believe they'll be ideal for accomplishing this and preventing brown flat spots on melons (and other fruits and vegetables). But. I've decided to stock up on these for my strawberries as well! The cradle will be ideal for lifting a bunch of strawberries from the ground. I've been losing a lot of good strawberries to bugs and slugs, so I'm really looking forward to adding these and having more delicious berries to eat:.
I've lost a few melons in the past because they rotted in the dirt due to insects burrowing in from underneath. These were great until those pesky ground squirrels ate all three of them in one day! I even managed to catch them using chewed tomatoes as bait in my squirrelinator. I understand that three is a small crop, but it would have sufficed for my family.
The gardening season has yet to begin in this area; As a result, they're still on the gardening shelf. They are not, however, as flimsy as some of the other offerings. They aren't big enough to do a good job of it. help to maintain a regular schedule a watermelon of sufficient size, a large pumpkin, or a large hubbard squash Buttercup squash, butternut squash, cantaloupe/musk melons, and smaller pumpkin varieties, on the other hand, should be a good size. Watermelons are a type of fruit.
better than I had anticipated This summer, I had a bumper crop of cantaloupes, and I was worried that they wouldn't fully ripen before rotting in the dirt, so I used these to make sure that didn't happen. I was able to easily move the cages to another location as the fruit ripened and I picked it. Unfortunately, they have been stored for the season, but the plan is to use them again next year or for as long as they last.
We have these under our cantaloupes, and when I checked them after a few days on these cradles, the bottoms of the fruit were covered in bugs!! Slugs and pill bugs even built their nests in the cradle's neck hole! Because the bottoms of the cradles did not touch the ground, the bugs crawled up to the melons through the holes in the cradle neck. Turning the melons every day and knocking the bugs off the bottom of the melon is the only way to keep them under control. That's not going to be of much use! Look for a different solution because these are ineffective.
They've managed to keep their heads above water despite their size. They're just as steady now as they were when we put them under the melons at the beginning of the season. They're big and heavy. sturdy.
