I expected brown sod plugs that were dormant, but this stuff is gorgeous: bright green, well-watered, and ready to plant.
My first purchase was made at Zoysia Farm Nurseries in Taneytown, Maryland, where they only sell Meyer Z52, the original variety. There are a slew of new varieties on the market right now. I received 15 of their plugs, which were 3 x 3 inches in size. I bought these a few months ago, and despite the fact that they were brown and dead when I got them, they have mostly grown and tuned into a lovely blue green color. Amazon was the site where I made my second purchase. These plugs came from Ezplug in Easton, Maryland, and are of the Japonica species, which is a Zoysia hybrid. In a 50 pack set, they received 100 plugs measuring 2 x 2 inches each. You received two packs of 100 plugs, each of which was green and had runners running in all directions. They were a little yellowed from the trip, but otherwise appeared to be in good health. I had 21 of them planted the day before yesterday. Despite being in their own cell, the plugs are densely grown together, so you'll have to really yank them apart from their neighbors. br>br>Right now, I prefer the look of the Z52 Meyer plugs, which have a distinctive green color. Because the Japonica plugs are new, I'll have to wait for a while to get a reading on them. You can see how the two strains compare in the image. The Meyer Z52 has a greener appearance than the other plugs.
UPDATEbr>Due to the warm, humid weather in North Georgia, plugs are now starting to spread out. It doesn't spread quickly, but it does grow thickly and has taken root among the weeds! The color blue is stunning. the color green! br>br>I ordered 100 plugs but only received 50. The shipper was contacted, and they were able to get the other plugs out over the weekend. The first box was a beautiful shade of green all the way to the tips. The second box had more brown than the first and appeared to have been overwatered. Both boxes have been planted, and we'll see how they fare in the red clay of northern Georgia. I did use an auger and filled the holes with a handful of a mixture of lawn soil and sand to help with drainage. It'll take time to see, but I'm optimistic!.
I made the holes for the plugs with a 4 foot long 2 inch diameter PVC pipe and a rubber mallet, then installed the plugs and set a battery operated timer on my hose sprinkler to water for 15 minutes every 6 hours. It's been two weeks since I put them in the ground. All of my plugs are flourishing. There were no fatalities. In a few weeks, I'll cut back on my watering. In addition, for your information: My earplugs took three days to arrive. They appeared to be in excellent condition. Early in July 2021, a new order was placed.
I'm not impressed with this product; I planted it about a month ago, watered it every day, and there's no life left in the plugs, while the grass around it thrives, zoizia. Not in the least. They won't spread because they're dead, I'm guessing. I had hoped to have a nice lawn, but this product did nothing to help.
This was something I ordered earlier in the year and planted in March. More than 95 of the 100 plugs received have sprouted and are growing well at this time. a fantastic rate of development The service provider is correct. water, water, and more water! Please keep in mind that growing a decent-sized area will take several years. It's not going to happen in a day or two. Next spring, I'll place another order to expand the area I've already planted.
That being said, I treated them more like sod than plugs, and I dug up two large areas. The first few days, I watered quite a bit. Then we went on a seven-day vacation. They were still alive when we returned home in July. The leaves are still green and spreading well at the end of November. There have been a few light frosts, but the temperatures have mostly remained above 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
This grass is growing in North Carolina's hard clay soil. True I did fix the spots where the plugs went in, but they did the rest, Had over 50% still growing very well, and now even have nice runners shooting out, and now have I'm thinking I'll use more top soil in the next batch I get in the spring to help them out even more. It was a pleasure to work with them, and they were extremely helpful.
