Lucky, on the other hand, was having some bowel issues. I'd be awakened at 3 a. m. by his pitiful little grunts. I felt terrible for him as he struggled to get his work done at 00 a. m. He's only a year and a half old. There has to be a way to deal with this. br>br>I decided to experiment with growing wheat grass to see if it could help him with his problem. My thumb has turned brown. I can't kill a plant because it grows back. I can't get a plant to live when I try to grow it. I decided that I needed a starter kit, so I purchased this. br>br>It's off to a bad start. There is no manual to be found. Hmm. I did, however, place a three-course meal on the table. I'm not completely stupid, because I have a pack of growing kits. I decided to combine one packet from each of the growing kit's packets. So far, everything has gone well. I placed them in the small planter, which I hope is properly assembled. Isn't it true that I was ready to go? Nothing happens after a few days. br>br> Hmm. These are plants, after all. Maybe they're thirsty? br>br>That appeared to be the answer. br>br>I bought this for my cats now. I bought it for Lucky, but I figured it'd be used by both cats. It turns out that only one cat gets any benefit from it, and it's the wrong cat. br>br>You see, Azrael has made it her personal mission in life to keep an eye on this thing and ensure that no grass seeds escape the green screen. I am not joking in the least. It's been about a week, and I've only seen her stand on top of this a few times. She pulls a sprout out of the screen when it threatens to reach the screen. She'll then consume the green stalk while discarding the rest. br>br>This is where Lucky comes in, as he enjoys batting the remaining roots and seed around. He even left one on my pillow the other day, and I'm pretty sure I screamed when I saw it. br>br>On the one hand, Azrael's insistence on not letting the tiny blades of grass go keeps her from eating all of my shoe laces, which is a huge plus. She goes through two pairs of shoe laces every week, which costs about the same as this planter. Simply put, if you consider that factor alone, this is a good investment. However, there's a good chance I'll need to buy another if I want to see any improvements in Lucky's digestive health. br>br>UPDATE: br>br> If you're going to buy this, don't buy the company's seed kits, I repeat, don't buy the seed kits. br>br>One afternoon, I returned home from work to find a strange odor in the house. It wasn't particularly potent, but it was certainly unpleasant. Someone had a bad case of halitosis, it smelled like. My kitties' breathing was not harmed, so I checked them out. As a result, I sat back and waited. br>br>The next morning, I awoke to an unbearable odor from which I had no idea where it came from. I ripped apart my kitchen in search of it, but it was nowhere to be found. I didn't realize the smell was the growing medium that came with the seed kits until later in the day, when I checked the water level in the planter. The odor was unbearable. br>br> That is something I cannot overstate. It has to be one of the most offensive odors I've ever encountered. I was about to throw it all away because I didn't want to clean it. Instead, I took it outside and hosed it down with a hose while using a generous amount of my car soap. That smell lingered in my nostrils for the rest of the day, and even after washing my hands, it lingered on my hands. br>br>I'm leaving a four-bedroom house. The planter gets a five-star rating because it accomplishes its goal. I'm not going to write such a glowing review for the seed packets. br>br>UPDATE: br>br> br>I'd like to add a couple of additional comments that might make owning this planter more enjoyable for potential buyers. br>br>First and foremost, a full packet of seeds is unnecessary. I used Mircacle Grow soil in my second attempt at growing, which can be found at Ace, Home Depot, and even Costco. I only used half of a packet of seeds, but they were still very thick. I'm going to try a quarter packet for my next round to see how things go. br>br>The grass took off in a big way. I noticed a few shoots poking through the grate on Saturday. On Sunday, I noticed that Azrael had grown tired of attacking the shoots, as a dozen of them had grown past the grate and turned into real grass blades. On Monday, I had a four-inch-high tuft of grass, and by Tuesday, it had grown to the point where it could no longer support its own weight. It's been a week, and they still appear to be in excellent health. Apart from the fact that they refuse to stand up. br>br>A deeper planter might solve the problem, but my goal isn't to have something that looks nice. My goal is to provide a small amount of grass for my cats to chew on to aid in their digestion. br>br>I haven't seen my cats eat the plant in a long time. They are, however, leaving grass blades all over the house, so I know they are. br>br>In general, I'd call this a win. I have a couple of minor quibbles, but overall, I am pleased with my purchase.

This is one of those products where I'm not sure if it was actually tested. It's an incredible idea. We'll get to the dirt in a minute, but your cat can't dig in the grass. As a result, as the grass grows, which it does quickly, the green thing is pushed up. And there's no way to get it down again. As a result, you're forced to choose between leaving it dangling in the grass or removing it. There is no way to secure it in place, rendering it useless. That problem might be resolved by a design. It comes with a tan-colored growing medium as well as the dirt. If you don't dump it and start fresh on a regular basis, it will start to smell really bad. Although this is unlikely to be an issue for most people, it is worth noting. It took a few days for me to figure out what was causing the odor. You can't treat it like a houseplant and leave it alone. I ended up using real dirt, which lasts a lot longer and doesn't stink as bad after a few days. I've grown the grass three times in the growing medium they provided, as well as once in potting soil.

Grass grows quickly (mine grew to be about 4-inches tall). 6 inches in a week of rainy weather in the Pacific Northwest) and easily. My only gripe is that once the grass starts to grow, the green lid does not stay put. Some grass blades emerge from the holes, but many do not, so the lid is pushed upwards until the gap between the green lid and the white base is so large that leaving it on is pointless. This is a significant design flaw because the lid keeps cats from digging in it, which is the main selling point of this particular cat grass planter. I'm not sure if there's a way to secure it, but I can't seem to find it. CatIt products rarely include instructions, which can be a problem in some cases. Their website only shows the order in which the three pieces of tray/lid should be placed, not how to latch the lid on. Next time, I'll try taping it on, but that appears to crush half of the grass.

CatIt products are always well-made, which is why I like them. conceived and made- out. However, because there are no instructions in the box, I had to deduct a star from this review. I mixed my seeds and planting medium before checking their website for watering instructions, only to discover that I wasn't supposed to mix them at all! So I had to spend an hour picking seeds out of vermiculite. br>br>There are excellent instructions on their website, CatIt, under the Senses Toys category, but nothing is included in the box. The following are the basic instructions: 1. br>br> Soak the seeds in water for at least 24 hours before using.
2. Keep them moist until they sprout by placing them between paper towels. It will take a few days for this to be completed.
3. Spread them over the top of the planting medium (whether it's the vermiculite they sell or just dirt) once they've sprouted. They shouldn't be mixed into the vermiculite; instead, they should be spread on top.
4. The grid is then applied, and the project is complete. Every couple of days, give them a drink of water to keep them from drying out, but not so much that they are constantly swimming. br>br>The soaking and sprouting steps are skipped in the video on the same page. He simply spreads the seeds on top and keeps them moist by covering them with plastic wrap until they sprout, so I suppose that's another option.
