It's actually quite amusing: It was the middle of the school year when I was old enough to graduate from pencils. sixties. Even though some of my desks still had the little well for a fountain pen bottle, we moved on to cartridge pens. And most of us who got our start with fountain pens used Sheaffer cartridge pens from Iowa. They were made with transparent barrels that came in a rainbow of colors at the time. The clear 'demonstrator' barrels were the rarest, and the ones that so many wanted, but I believe red was the most popular. br>br>There were some kids who had Parker 45's, but these cost five times as much as the $1 Sheaffers did. There were a few kids with cartridge Esterbrooks or Wearevers, but the companies were on their way out. They were teeny-tiny cartridges that didn't hold a lot of information- Sheaffer and Parker did not fall into that trap, despite being forced to be that size to save money on retooling for fountain pen companies used to bottle filling. br>br>The Parker cartridge was long and skinny, with a built-in emergency reservoir at the top to get you through a sudden empty cartridge. As far as I'm aware, that cartridge is still in use, but I don't believe it has the emergency reservoir on top. br>br>The Sheaffer cartridge had the advantage of being able to be used from both ends. That meant simplicity of use for both children and adults. It also had a good amount of ink capacity. It was also large enough that the ink level inside could be seen clearly-- Sheaffer Washable Blue is the color of choice for us. br>br>I've loved fountain pens since I was in my early twenties and have a collection of them. Even though I have pens that cost hundreds of dollars more, one of my daily favorites is still one of those Sheaffer $1 cartridge pens from the 1960s. Those steel Sheaffer nibs, which were so tough in those clumsy little hands, are still in use. No, they're not the smoothest, and because they're as rigid as possible, they can't achieve the nuances that more flexible gold nibs can. However, because of Sheaffer's commitment to quality in Iowa, they were well-designed and continue to serve. Amazingly, new Sheaffer cartridge pens from the last production run are still available on EBay in the United States! br>br>I have to admit that I don't use these cartridges very often. Some ink purists believe that cartridge ink, regardless of brand, is inferior to bottled ink from the same companies. I don't use cartridges because they are so expensive; instead, I use bottled ink to refill my own. I do, however, keep a couple of these in my briefcase in case of an emergency. They're ideal if a cartridge runs out while traveling. br>br>I'd recommend the Waterman Kultur (a Euro-style fountain pen) to anyone interested in learning the seductive sensation of writing with a fountain pen. As part of my preparation for the inevitable, I'm cleaning out my parents' house. I came across these old pens and thought it would be fun to see if they would write; I was hoping to find one to try out after reading some of the negative reviews, but I decided to go with the 5-star rating instead. pack. The installation is very obvious. poke the pokey on the pen's end into a poker-sized end of ink. It didn't write right away, so I let gravity take its course, and after about 40 minutes, both of them wrote smoothly. There are no smears or glops. I'm delighted, and now that I have three more refills, I'm on the lookout for more old pens. I'm glad I grew up in a time when cursive was taught.

However, without the use of a drill to open the end and insert the nib, it was impossible to make it work. The old ones were operated by simply screwing the nib into place. This product's manufacturing should be reviewed by the company.

An ink cartridge that has served you well over the years - My fountain pens are mostly of this type. It's refreshing to see a design that hasn't changed in a long time. Every time I replace a cartridge in one of my old pens, it brings back fond memories. Rolling gel pens are the closest modern equivalent. These are nice, but they're not the same as the old faithful. Nothing beats the convenience of using a tried-and-true method. a genuine fountain pen I guess I'll keep buying these until they stop making them or until I die. In an emergency, I've even used a syringe to refill these from a bottle. But my preferred method is to simply insert a new cartridge and continue playing. The ink is excellent, and the cartridge design is attractive.

I've been looking for a refill for my Shaeffer calligraphy fountain pen and have come up empty-handed at several office supply stores. Finally, I discovered these, which are in excellent condition, intact, and have excellent ink quality. Exactly like the one that came with my first pen. Very pleased with the purchase, and the price was very reasonable.

These cartridges are compatible with the Schaffer ink pens that I've had since I was a child. Use the end with the shallow hole as a starting point. I simply screw the tip into the shell after pushing it onto the pen. I suppose you could put it in the shell and then screw on the tip like we did with the original cartridges, but pushing them on the tip is so much easier. On some of my fountain pens, it can be a tight fit and won't come out when I unscrew the tip. I always have a paperclip on hand, and it easily removes the empty ink cartridge.

Sheaffer pens and ink have been a part of my life for more than 50 years. Because the little rubber bladder on my last refillable pen was leaking, I reluctantly switched to a cartridge type pen: It wouldn't completely fill, and as I used the pen, the ink thickened. I now simply keep a large supply of cartridges on hand so that I don't run out in the middle of a project, and I use Sheaffer calligraphy pens on a daily basis. Although it took some time to break them in, the ink from the cartridge now flows freely. Other colors are available, but I use the Jet Black cartridge for about 99% of my work.
