This product should suffice if you're looking for a low-cost fax machine, but keep in mind that the distinctive ring feature can be difficult to set up. I tried calling HP support, but the first person had no idea how to resolve the problem, and associate put me through to her supervisor, who also had no idea what he was doing and told me that the machine couldn't handle distinctive ring because it didn't have two ports! This was nonsense, and it's consistent with the poor quality phone support I've received from HP in the past, which was almost always provided by Indian call centers. The machine has a distinctive ring feature, according to the product description on the Amazon website, so I looked it up on the Internet and found the solution in HP technical notes. In general, the machine is good; it can send and receive faxes, but it is not designed for high-volume printing. However, if you anticipate needing assistance setting it up, I recommend taking an aspirin before calling HP's customer service.
I've had this machine for a few weeks and have put it to good use. It's ideal for sending documents, photos, and other files to and from doctors or businesses that require a FAX or can't send you an e-mail. Due to confidentiality regulations, mail will not be sent. The only flaw I've discovered is that the included ink cartridge is only a starter, so I had to go out and purchase a regular one. It should last a long time, but HP could improve things by including a genuine one with the FAX. I had one like this at work and it never gave me any problems, so I bought one for myself to use at home. On the output print, the quality is excellent, and all of the features are helpful. It doesn't have a "received tray," but if it's on a shelf, a cardboard tab to catch the incoming FAX under the machine will suffice. It's not an issue on a table or desk. I would strongly recommend this machine to anyone looking for a low-cost home FAX machine; just bite the bullet and buy a regular cartridge when you get it, and you're good to go.
This fax machine costs $65, and there's a reason for it. If you're lucky, you'll get 100 pages out of the tiny black cartridge before it runs out. This cartridge is priced at $40 even on Amazon. That is a monetary value of zero. Page count is 40. This is in addition to the fact that it makes no indication that it is out of ink. When I returned from lunch one day, I discovered that five pages had been faxed, with the last two blank and no indication on the screen. br>br>This fax also allows spam calls to ring incessantly until it realizes it is junk and makes an even louder beeping noise; when printing pages, it sounds like my old ink jet from the 1990s, and it does not print quickly, taking up to two minutes per page. Because the sound was so annoying, I had to move it to another room. br>br>Since then, I've brought my wireless Lexmark all-in-one printer from home, which works much better (quieter) and prints 500 pages for $5.
It's made by HP, a company known for producing printers (my current all-in-one printer is also made by HP), so you know you're getting a good fax machine. The price! It's one of the main factors that drew me in! For what it is, it is ridiculously low-cost! This isn't a high-end office fax, but for home use, it's nearly perfect! It even uses printer ink cartridges, which are inexpensive and easy to come by, rather than the more expensive fax printing films that can only be found in specific locations. Not to mention how quickly they print; receives and sends faxes in a flash while remaining completely silent! The disadvantages will now be discussed. Only 15 faxes can be sent at a time. Standard papers are 5x11 inches in size. For some, that may appear to be a little low. It also has a small LCD screen and a few buttons for navigating the system. This could be a real annoyance. Finally, there is no answering machine, which I suppose is optional, but I was used to having one on my old fax machine and was disappointed to discover that this one did not. Overall, I think this thing is a bargain for home faxing.
It was a bad decision. The initial setup was straightforward, but I wasted an entire day and a half attempting to get it to fax to the test number, which never worked. It could be heard dialing out, but no confirmation was ever given to me. I then attempted to fax the information to the number to which I was in a hurry, but that also failed. So I had to drive 5 miles to a copy shop and pay $12 to have my document faxed quickly! br>The issue appears to be that the pages are scanned but no data is sent to the receiver. This fax machine, as well as the lack of HP customer service assistance and Amazon, have completely disgusted me. I'd like to apologize to com for denying me the opportunity to return it. It's now worth $70 as a paperweight. This fax machine should be avoided at all costs!.
I'm about to repackage this fax machine so that I can send it back to Amazon. Except that the tiny toner cartridge that is supposed to be clicked into place inside the machine does not appear to fit or sit anywhere, it appears to be a perfectly decent fax machine. I'm returning the product after a pointless phone call to HP (somewhere in New Delhi, India), and I'm assuming I'll be getting another. The point is that this one stinks, if only because you can't set it up properly without raising your blood pressure and wanting to throw it off your balcony.
