Install was easy, it sounded good, and it worked. In my experience, drums are more difficult to play than guitar and bought a used Yamaha set that didn't have a hole in the kick pedal So that I could mic the kick easily, I added this kickport. With the attached ring, you stick it directly to the res head, and then you trace around the inner edge with a hobby knife to cut a perfect hole out, and then you simply plug the kick port into it. Easy to install, took less than 5 minutes. The kick gets a lot of oomf from it.
The additional resonance from the plastic/rubber port resulted in a rubberized sound to the kick. While the device did make the kick sound more deep, it also gave it a ringing sound. Almost a ball bounce type of overtone was added to the attack. The tone was destroyed. In my opinion, I would not recommend this device. It's easier to adjust the kick heads or buy a larger kick drum for a softer, cleaner sound. There should be a section for "As seen on TV" in this category.
On each of the kick drums of my three different drum sets, I use Kickports. All of my kicks are 16", 24", and 26" and they all sound fantastic when I add these to them. With the Kickports, the low end frequencies really pop and you get a really punchy bass sound. In addition to looking great, they are also incredibly useful for placing microphones. This is a first class kick drum that I strongly recommend to drummers who want to have a deep punchy sound.
Mic'Ed does a good job. The ReSo Head should only be used if it is thin and unmuffled. The muffle ring does not work on a head that has a floating muffle ring. An Evans head that I printed myself is in my possession. It's only available in single-ply there is no other option I find this to be very helpful in lowering fundamental pitch. I appreciate it!.
The kick drum worked well on my 22" mapex kick. I was skeptic at first, but it did work on my drums. I used to have a solid reso head before this There are no holes in the design. The music sounded pretty good as well. The kickport focused the sound when I put it on. It took my bass player a few seconds to mention the kick drum sound. have one in my DW kit and it didn't seem to make much of a difference, but the one in my mapex kit produced more of a change. This is amazing!.
It's true that the Kickport works but you need to keep realistic expectations in mind. It is used only for rehearsals when drums are not mic'd and is absolutely wonderful. The kick adds a significantly higher low end to the ambient kick sound, but not when it is recorded. It is well worth the price.
A good time is always had.
A sweet treat.
