Selected User Reviews For Sennheiser MD 421 II Cardioid Dynamic Mic
It is a staple to have in your gear pile. The microphone is very versatile and can be used for a wide variety of purposes. High output levels, a large diaphragm, and a very well-engineered variable high pass filter ring are some of the factors that contribute to the versatility of this microphone. With the high pass filter selector, you can transform the filter from an extremely powerful bottom end response for recording bass cabinets and toms to a very thin level that could be used as an overhead mic for drums or for communications grade speech emulation. For voiceover, or for singing work, you'd need to manage plosives either through pop filters or in the application of compressed air. An emphasis is placed on the upper midrange of the voice with great articulate quality Response to a range of frequencies. As long as it is well managed, it performs very well on a wide variety of platforms. As my voice is low-frequency and carries a lot of low frequency energy, I set these at a mid-range frequency The high pass filter selector can be used to select a single point. The program works perfectly. Cardioid patterns in particular have a nice forgiving sweet spot to them, allowing some freedom of movement with a predictable and manageable proximity effect. Using the cardioid pattern can help you achieve some great dynamic speech effects as well as vocal effects when In case you are strictly doing voiceover work and lack the right outboard processing gear or the experience to deal with processing, other mic designs like the EV RE series, the Rode or the Heil PR40 may make it easier for you. However, this microphone has a much broader application.
I am running it through a Symetrix 528e to use this as a broadcast microphone. I think this is wonderful. It is an entirely different beast than the RE20 it replaces. Make sure you pay attention to the 5-minute rule When you switch the roll off switch, you can get quite a few different sounds based on how much you roll Our settings were set to M, which is the flattest and, based on my opinion, the best sounding setting. This is one of the best investments on the market.
My toms have been picked up by 5 different microphones although I'm not a sound engineer. One of the only ones that sounds really good is this one. As well as being the most expensive, it's also the most difficult to apply. The most I'm willing to spend to mic up my drum set is less than $2,000. I'm sure there's a better mic out there, but this is the most I can afford to spend. I would like to point out one thing. Considering its size, you will want to decide how and where it will be placed before spending the.
Although both of the aforementioned mics are great in their own right, I'm kicking myself for not acquiring the MD 421 sooner. I am amazed by this mic. There is nothing better than beautiful clarity combined with the ability to handle high SPL levels, giving this microphone the stamp of approval it deserves.
I am of the humble opinion that this is the best dynamic microphone ever. It is true that I do respect some of the alternatives I have and use in certain occasions, such as the SM57 and E906, but the MD421 is powerful and much better for recording drums (snare, toms, kick), bass, and guitars. A great mic. I recommend it highly and will be purchasing more of them.
In the home studio and everywhere else, it is one of the greatest workhorses. In the past, this tool was primarily used for toms. However modern people can use it for a host of other tasks. I've been using it for male vocals in a live setting with great results, and I've found it to be great on guitar in the right context.
It works perfectly for its purpose.
I really like the sound of the The design of the mic clip is awful. This is something I hope I never break.
