So I bought a new head that looked exactly like this from a friend who couldn't tell if it was the batter or snare side. I'm not sure what it is, and I'm not sure how to find out. ?

A snare side head is usually light plied to allow the snares to move, while a batter head has many layers to hit on.

How do these compare to the original Falam k batter heads, which snapped my lugs due to the tension?

Since installing it on my wooden Pearl Export snare, I've had no problems. None of the lugs have ever snapped.

Is this a top or side head for the snare?

It's a top/battery head situation. Extremely long lasting. For my snare drum, I only use these heads.
