A horn mute will not fit a mellophone usually. There are many trombone mutes that do, however! It's My Hell & Hell Mellophones are designed with uneven flares and larger cups. My B cup mute and Denis Wick straight mute fit perfectly on my mellophone, but my plastic Bach cup mute won't fit due to its larger cup and shallower flare.

Honestly, product looks great and all, but shortly after we used it, the paint started to come off, and after further use the base started to crack. For the sake of holding everything together, I wentrilla glued it. It was a great seller because they were quick and helpful with the order and the delivery, but the product is iffy in general.
When I bought this, my sons and I all play brass instruments so we knew exactly what we were getting into. In preparation for my son's new computer, I bought this instead of a metal one because he wanted to drill an eye hook on the end for a strap to go In order to prevent dropping it when there is no time to put it down, he runs his hand through the strap for quick mute removal. The sound isn't the same as metal, but it's just as effective.
The French Horn is my first instrument and I've played brass for a long time. As a matter of course, we need to mutes the music. Considering that I was a beginner, I was not looking to spend a fortune on a new mute, and I assumed that I would be fine with a simple, stone-lined mute. The bell fits snugly into the insert. There are no complaints about the quality. The mute plays well in tune, and the conductor has been satisfied as well. I am not familiar with all the nuances that may exist with mutes made from other materials, but this one serves its purpose well and comes at a reasonable price. I wish the same were true for the French Horn.
The horn players at my high school and junior high school will be using these as starter mutes. The product does the job, but it should include a wrist strap so that you can use it and remove it quickly. One of my older ones is over 30 years old, but it still works well.
The Horn mutes are made from wood. There's not much else I can add to this. My career is in Music Education, so it is convenient to me, although I may choose to go the pricier straight mute route in the My recommendation for the high school would be You can compare If you're a student at the beginning of your college career, this would be a great mute for you.
As you can see, this works flawlessly.
One of the reasons I did not give a five-star rating is that it needs to be broken-in. The rest of it is great and I would highly recommend it.
