Questions & Answers

A missing line for 70 degrees can be seen in all three product photos. Could one of you double-check that your square has all of the required lines?

Mine, like all the others, has a 70-degree line.

Why does the item weigh less than one pound but the shipping weight is two? How much is 5 pounds?

It's most likely a typo or simply a shipping weight. Mine was around 9 oz., according to the scale. ten ounces br>It's a useful tool to have for a lifetime, and you won't be disappointed if you get one. The text is simple to follow. It's something I enjoy doing with.

It's a good speed square, but there's room for improvement
3/5

This square is one of my favorites. The lip that aligns square with the board is deeper than the Swanson, which can be a blessing or a curse depending on the situation. br>br>However, Empire needs to machine indents like the Swanson so I can easily mark quick rips down a board. br>br>The lip that aligns square with the board is deeper than the Swanson, which can either be a blessing or a curse depending on the situation. Finally, the aluminum has a soft feel to it. My Swanson has a few chips and dents that my fellow carpenters' Swanson doesn't appear to have. Is it possible that it's simply a case of bad luck?.

With a few sharp edges, it is extremely accurate
4/5

As evidenced by my Brown and Sharp machinist square, this square is extremely accurate. The white on blue laser lettering makes it extremely readable. The edges are razor sharp because it was CNC machined. I didn't want to handle it with my bare hands, so I used a Swiss file to gently break the edges, which broke through the blue anodized finish and left the edges with a gleaming aluminum finish. This way, it actually looks quite nice. However, I wish the sharp edges had been broken before anodizing. It would bring an already excellent product to a whole new level.

How is it possible that one rafter square is significantly superior to another? There isn't much to differentiate between competitors when it comes to a simple and long-established tool like this, but I did find one feature that stood out
5/5

Very simple to understand - The laser etched markings on the high contrast anodized surface are well defined and in sharp focus, and I'm confident they'll stay that way for a long time; you'll see why Empire calls them "HD" right away. This is a significant improvement over traditional stamped markings, which are then painted over, or silkscreened markings on a painted surface, which are indistinct and quickly wear away. It's strange how sight and memory work, but whenever I refer to one of these "HD" marks, look away to check square or whatever, then return to it, my eye seems to go right back to the correct mark, whereas with the indistinct painted over stamped markings, I have to hunt and repeat to make sure I've got it right. It's similar to how your eye is drawn to the longer, more distinct graduations at the 1/4 inch points on a tape measure. Finally, for whatever it's worth, it appears to be machined from a single billet of aluminum rather than stamped and welded sheet metal.

Fit and finish are much better
5/5

I was in the store a day after ordering this square when I noticed a bright blue square. I was disappointed with the overall fit/finish because the price was significantly lower than what I had paid here. I took note of the product number because I was concerned that it was the square I had just ordered. When I got home, I discovered that the one in the store was the E2992 model, while I had ordered the E2994, so all I had to do was wait to see how the one I ordered compared. When it arrived, I was glad I had chosen the more expensive option because the difference was night and day. The stamping was of higher quality, with a flawless finish and, as far as I can tell, good accuracy. br>br>If you don't mind spending a few extra dollars for a better fit and finish, this is the clear choice. I'm sure the E2992 or similar other brands will do the job just as well, but this is the much nicer tool if you value that.

It produces lines that are perfectly straight
3/5

I compared it to another square to see if it was square, and I believe this one was the culprit. But, just to be sure, I'll have to go out and purchase a square to ensure that my squares are square. *sigh* It's pretty, and it does exactly what I need it to do for general work, so it doesn't have to be perfect; they should just call it something else. 'Perfect squares' sets the tone for the rest of the game.

The water is crystal clear
5/5

The main reason I bought it and used it so far was to get straight pencil lines on my haphazard woodworking and then use it as a sort of saw guide. So far, it has delivered on all of my expectations.

The package arrived in excellent shape
5/5

I don't know what else to say except that it's spot on. This Speed Square has made my life a lot easier. I've compared it to a number of other Squares and found it to be accurate and precise. br>I first saw it a few years ago and have always wished to own one. I finally bought it and have no regrets.

Speed Square is very well made
5/5

Solid speed square that has been well-made. Isn't it true that I said it was well-made? It is, in fact. I'm not sure how long the markings will last, but they appear to me to be permanent. The aluminum is 3/16" thick, making it quite substantial. I like the idea of being able to download the book for it via QR code to my phone whenever I want, rather than having to keep track of it like I did with the paper versions.
