I bought this gauge because I needed another gauge to replace the cheaper WR one I had, so I bought it and took it to the shop to try it out. br>About the author: I set it up and marked out a tenon because it felt good in my hand. It was easy to cut and didn't slip at all. br>I assumed the lines had been painted on. I tried scraping it off with a knife, but I couldn't. I also couldn't get the black japanning/paint off. I'm sure it'll wear out over time, but I don't rely on the lines on my marking gauge. There are no lines on my Veritas. br>Just to make sure, I scraped the black and gold paint off the WR gauge with my knife. Also $7 more for the wr. Tsk. br>Because this gauge has a flat head, I can use it to measure something precisely. In contrast to that idiotic wr. Overall, I give this a thumbs up and will most likely purchase another to keep on hand.
What you pay for is exactly what you get. ) Veritas Micro has been half-priced. Adjusting the Wheel Marking Gauge is a compromise because it is made entirely of metal. Has a soft wood (pine) job completed. It's fine for weekend DIY projects. Yes, the markings are difficult to read, and all of the marks are the same length in between. It's difficult to get a secure grip on the knob. I'm not sure if it's because of the rood's paint or because of the knob's size. So, if you want quality and the ease of microadjusting (to make tight cuts), choose Veritas. If you're just having fun cutting from dried 2x4s, this will suffice.
My first day with it, the cutter broke. I didn't drop it; I simply went to use it when half of the cutter snapped off. Maybe I slammed it down too hard or something, but it's either a flaw or a short-lived product. I'm not sure where I'd get replacement blades, but a generic one might work.
For the money, this is a good performance. Excellent value for money. It's not as nice as the Veritas model I already have, but it's less than half the price, so it's a good value.
I was pleasantly surprised by this tool; for the price, it is quite substantial. Extra cutters are included, and the instructions are simple to follow. One of the few instances in which you get exactly what you pay for.
This is a fantastic guage for marking. If, like me, you've never used one before, there is a learning curve. All I had to do was tighten the screw that held the cutter in place so it wouldn't spin.
It's difficult to use and get accurate markings with this method.
