For my lathe work, I required a depth gauge. I tried a few of the less expensive ones, but they were all disappointing. The Starrett depth gauge is a high-quality instrument for measuring depth. The blade is wider, the rule is thinner, and the depth is controlled by a positive lock. This instrument, like all others from Starrett, is known for its high quality.
The base of the measuring blade is square, as determined by an Engineer's square. I lost my original gauge in Thailand's floods a couple of years ago, and this one was well worth the money. This is an excellent substitute.
A decent depth gauge that is simply constructed and marginally strong enough to last in my shop if I remember to treat it gently at all times. I would have preferred a more powerful measuring gauge, but I believe the one provided will suffice.
This tool is fantastic; in addition to a 4" double square and a 6" 4R rule, it has everything I need. day- bring it to the model and furniture store. The squareness of the beam to the body comes in handy when checking square dovetails in wood and laying out hardware, among other things.
