Although I am not currently a professional machinist, I purchased this for use in my garage, and I have other Fowler instruments that I am very pleased with. During my time in school, I worked as a production machinist, so I have some nice tools and experience with them. This instrument did not make me very happy. The one I got had a noticeable rub or pause during the depth rod's travel, which is unacceptable for professional or home use. You won't get accurate depth information if the rod is hung up. I was able to get a refund because I returned mine. I'm sure not all of these have the same issue as mine, but the overall quality of the unit was not up to par with my other machinist tools.
I work as a professional machinist and am slowly expanding my tool collection. I was interested in this gauge because the man I was shadowing had a Mitutoya that was nearly identical to this one. His cost him more than $400. I purchased this with the expectation of returning it, but I decided to give it a shot. It worked flawlessly when I first got it and continues to do so. Using the /- key 001 dim can be achieved with ease. When changing out rods, you'll need to re-zero, but that's something you should do anyway to ensure accurate measurements every time. I have and will continue to recommend this product; for under $100, it's worth a shot.
Perfect.
The tool is of excellent quality. Steel is of excellent quality and has been machined to perfection.
Excellent.
Because rod lengths vary, the indicator must be reset to zero when changing rods, albeit for only a few thousandths of a second. I simply use a gage block on a surface plate, so it's not a big deal. If you make gate inserts on a regular basis, this is a must-have tool.
As expected, this is an excellent Fowler tool.
