Questions & Answers

In a few reviews, the bore gauge was claimed to require additional tools to obtain the measurements. Does that make sense?

According to this approach, most bore gauges work as follows As far as the bore range (tip that you are using), you need a "master ring gage" to "zero" the instrument for that range. (While you can get by a good ballpark quickly and dirty, you bring some serious errors, and you are introducing some errors into the program). By removing and inserting different sizes of bits, you alter the tool, and the calibration needs to be performed accordingly. The other approach (which is more expensive) is to use a program called the "master setting tool", In this case, you must use a physical reference such as an actual ring or block of the precision grade you want rather than another tool (which is extremely dangerous). As part of your toolkit, you should include these references for all precision work that you will do in the future. The absence of a reference makes having a precise tool more of a pointless exercise.

Can you vouch for the accuracy of the pictures? There are two people missing from the photos. The numbers 4 and 2 make up 4" & 1 is equal to 0 while 0 is equal to ?

There is no problem with the photo and the set. There is no difference between the SAE set and the metric set except that the metric set has one extra extension, leaving the SAE set with only one empty slot.

How do you know where the product is from?

The few times I have used it, I have had In order to get a US made product, you should spend an additional $$ dollars, but for occasional use this will work.

I haven't tested it yet but I do not think a low battery is the reason the gauge is having problems, the numbers constantly change and won't 0 or read. Could a low battery be the problem?

You don't need a battery to power this mechanical dial indicator! A "zero" point can be easily set by rotating the face of the indicator, as with any mechanical indicator.

This unit is peddled by Fowler High Precision with garbage specs, so please be aware that they use deceptive practices
3/5

Before you buy this, everything looks good, mainly because the specs are hidden. Spec sheets for this unit are included in the case and you'll need to purchase this item to get them. This is 646. This model is the 400. It will be one of those things that you say to yourself -
There is no way this is right, I paid almost twice as much for the 52-foot long This is 646. There was an expectation that the 500 model would be more accurate. It's possible that you, too, in the future will reach out to customer service only to learn that both units are the same. The number of graduations in 0001 vs. On the 400 model, there are 0005 graduations. If you dialed a different number on the dial, the error would be . They are asking for $100+ for the phone dialing. You might want to know what you're good at.

Precision work on modern engines is not appropriate with this tool
3/5

The following update has been made to the original review In exchange for returning the instrument described below, I bought Fowler's 52-track digital recorder This is 646. There's good repeatability, and it seems to be measuring correctly as a "comparison" based on some cross-referencing Fowler's other gauge, the 52-inch gauge, is appropriate for MODERN engines, even if this unit (below) is not the right gauge This is 646. I suppose people in the 1% who don't rebuild their own engines (LOL) don't bother with the Mitutoyo gauge. 500 is fine when people in the 1% are concerned. It would be nice if Fowler or Amazon were above board in the advertisement and honestly and openly disclosed the accuracy of this gauge to be plus or minus. A measuring tool with values like these basically makes no sense whatsoever for any precision work on a modern engine where, say, the allowed out of round value The number 04! If used for precision work, this should not be marketed as such. It would have been more beneficial for me to BE aDVERTISED OPENLY in plain English that the error is so large. Otherwise, I would have known that it was not appropriate for my intended use and I could have avoided all the waste associated with shipping it back and forth. In this case, manufacturers and their representatives should be making a concerted effort to DISCLOSE the relevant facts regarding a product so that I don't have to play games to find the facts. We tend toward this sort of outcome rather regularly, and it is a major reason why we're so unhappy in our country. If you are measuring an engine cylinder, you need a gauge with an accuracy that is significantly higher than the one that is used in this particular example. The width of a human hair is 0. 0009 In Fowler's case, he is only later to disclose THE product to you once it has arrived in your mailbox, by which time it is.

It is not worthless, however, since it is gauged to an inch
3/5

The pros are The quality is decent. Goes 1 in 1
A nice range of 4" to 6" will work well for most people*Cons A misleading product description appears on the product page. There are no spaces in the It is rated for an accuracy of 0. 001" on the dial, but it is only rated for 0. 020" on the dial. This is "0005". In other words, this is a 1 and This is an indicator of "0001". There is shoddy stitching on the threads, and they may need to be Pittsburghed to prevent What if I were to buy this Please note
*****Further As a result of the 0, the poor accuracy can be managed. This dial has a 0001 numerical value. Clearly, you can see where the jump occurs. As long as you zero your gauge the same way you measure, you should be able to hold 0 as long as you like. When you get a sense of them, you can add "0003". For this price point, though, you would be better off buying less expensive brands for less than $60 Currently, 70 is the best accuracy for similar applications. It is possible to argue against this by pointing out that There is a smaller range of choices for those at lower price points. This is something you have to decide for yourself whether it is worth double the cost.

The two are too different for me to compare
5/5

As this is the first, and hopefully the only, that I will own, I will not suggest it to anyone else. The review I read compared this to half a dozen or more brands/models, and even though this one in imperial measure (inch) didn't gather as many high ratings as some others, the reasons reasons weren't significant to me, or simply didn't wash with me. Every time I read this Fowler, I was drawn back to it. As slow as the US has been ((pledged to go metric back in 1970's), eventually we're going to be dealing with It was crucial for Fowler to use CARBIDE tips. A small gauge will not measure as well as an Anytime gauge This is the only negative. Suggest not using it before you use it. Detailed instructions are found on page 30 of the Valvoline package. A choice of anvil was made. I gave it a go. I found I needed to add Holding the Micrometer in a vise was done using a Stanley brand clamp, a ball swivel, rubber-covered jaws, and a ball swivel socket. The piece of wood is suitable A small-sized business Observed that the gauge and adjustable anvil of the indicator were in alignment (pretty Just slide the snipped hole into the opening of a micrometer anvil with the open end angled to allow the bore gauge anvil to serve as a slide. As far as I could tell, the gauge appeared smooth enough. It seemed very close to being spot on The needle width might be a bit different. Having been a machinist for years, I'm used to fine lines and sharp corners There is no problem with the box. I will add a 3rd spacer washer covered with elastic (clothing variety), in the first third. There are five, one, two, and three. If they are easily lost, would they need to be reprinted? Hold the elastic in place with tape.
