While a telescopic gauge isn't the most precise tool, it should be able to repeat within a few tenths of an inch. 001". This was not the case. The bad chrome plating on the ends is to blame. These are completely useless due to pitting, burrs, swirles, ridges, and other flaws. Aside from that, the chrome plating is very thin. This is the only time I've ever used these. The plating has already started to flake off.
These are inexpensive, and you get what you pay for with them. They're not going anywhere. It's a gritty arm movement. They wobble, making it impossible to take accurate measurements. If you're measuring in fractions of an inch, they'll come in handy. Not suitable for tenths of a millimeter measurements.
As stated above, they are cheap knockoffs that do not work at all, and will be returned.
It's a little filthy, so a thorough cleaning is recommended. So far, they've been within a thousandth of a thou of accuracy.
Snap gauges are a nice set. The case is nice, but it's a pain to open; I had to file down the plastic retaining clips. There are no markings on the case that indicate gauge sizes. Some of the gauges were stiff, and they required oil to open and close smoothly.
Although the telescopic rods are a little sloppy, they appear to be accurate. It's not a Starrett, but it's not priced like one, so I expected them to be a little loose. In comparison to the junkie plastic sleeve that everyone else gives you, this case is extremely nice. Overall, I'd recommend these to anyone looking for a good set of gauges on a tight budget.
Instructions are simple to use and follow. The accuracy of your reading will be affected by the temperature.
I only use one of the set's items, but it's been put to good use and has yet to fail.
