Questions & Answers

Has anyone tried woodburning with this gun, and if so, what kind of wood did they use?

Becky, I'm going to add a qualifier to my response to your woodburning query. I've had the pleasure of using a variety of irons. Electronics, electricity, and wood-burning stoves are all examples of electronic devices. To practice any of these skills, you'll need the right tool. This particular iron was made to be used as an electrical tool. I'm a tool, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. If I had the ability, I would put a turbo on everything. Knowing a little about woodburning, I'd like you to imagine not only the tip you'll use to burn, but also some of the intricate hand motions you'll use to achieve your desired effects. This straight-edged iron would be far more useful if it could be rolled in your fingers. can provide on hand grip Before using these irons on wires, they must first be "tinned." In addition, the "instant-" If left on all the time, the "heat" I adore could ruin this gun. Becky, you've come to the right place; now go find yourself a good woodburning iron. Weller is a great choice; they make excellent irons and guns. Rusty

Is it possible to solder 6 awg wire terminals and splices with the Weller 9400pks 140/100 soldering gun?

I don't think 140W is enough for 6 conductors, and I doubt it could handle anything larger than a 12. A torch or a heat gun will be required.

Is it possible to use it in a car? I won't be soldering wire thicker than 10 gauge or thinner than 16 gauge. Is this the tool for me?

On my house wiring, I've been using my old 8200 (the 9400 is supposedly a reworked 8200). Instead of using twist nuts to hold a wire bundle together, I use my 8200 and 1/8" rosin core solder to solder the bundle together first, then add the twist nut. There will never be a chance for my connections to fail this way. I've wrapped up to 5 12 wires and soldered them together with the 8200. It may take up to 30 seconds to get the work temperature high enough to melt the solder, so be patient while heating up the wire. br>br>So, in response to your query: For soldering 16 - this is unquestionably the gun to use. Make sure to use rosin core solder and 10 wire. Any other method will result in solder joints that are unsatisfactory.

What type of stand can I get, and where can I get it?

This gun doesn't require a stand; simply lay it on its side to isolate the tip. Get yourself some wood and an old wire coat hanger. It will come to you if you hold one in one hand and the other in the other.

Let's keep it civil
3/5

To put it mildly, this gun is "hobbyist" quality at best. My old Weller gun, which was the same wattage as this one, finally gave up the ghost. The new gun isn't nearly as effective as the old one. br>br>According to the gun's online description, it has a heat-resistant coating. A six-second warm-up period is required. It takes me about 15 to 20 minutes for mine. After 30 seconds of work, the gun should be allowed to cool for five minutes, according to the packaging. That limit is automatically enforced with my gun once more: The gun case will become extremely hot if you continue to use it without a cooling period. The soldering tip, on the other hand, does not. br>br>In a nutshell, this gun is too big to fit into tight spaces for small jobs, and it's also underpowered. able to handle large tasks I'll swap it out for you.

This was a poor purchase
3/5

I should have read the reviews first, as this gun is nothing more than a toy gun, as someone else stated. I bought it on the spur of the moment because of the Weller name. Is it true that it heats up in six seconds as stated - NO. Also, no one sells it as a tip, which is fine because the tips are terrible. I was using this gun one day when the tip broke, so I went to Amazon to order new tips. They are not for sale. The tips are made of a round coat hanger-style steel that burns out after an hour of use. They slide in and are held in place by small set screws that must be tightened on a regular basis or the gun will not heat up. After I throw this gun in the trash, I'm never buying another Weller product.

Circuit Breakers were tripped due to a defective heating coil
3/5

In the three weeks following purchase, I used the item for a week's worth of time. Several times, the trigger became stuck in the on position - To get it to unstick, I had to press it several times. The soldering gun caused the power to go out and tripped the circuit breakers while in use. My attempt to see if the gun would work again after the breaker had been reset blew the circuits immediately after activating the button. On closer inspection of the inside, a visible burn on the heating coil (see photo) can be seen. This item was only used for a week and was used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

Another piece of Chinese junk put together by inmates and kids
3/5

Weller products have been a part of my life for a long time. All of them were purchased at a time when quality was a priority. I'm going to have to replace this cord because it's too stiff to use. The allen screw fastener used to hold the tip in place is a farce. The best I can say about it is that it resembles a soldering iron and is labeled Weller. Because I believe you get roughly the same result regardless of which brand you buy, I gave it two stars instead of one.

Junk! This is my second purchase of a Weller soldering iron
3/5

br>The first was a $19 40-watt prank that irritated Manti to the point where I smashed it with a hammer. br>So I reasoned that perhaps I was being overly frugal. Give Weller a chance by purchasing something that they are proud of. That isn't the case at all! br>Even after sending two emails outlining all of the issues I had with it. Weller has yet to respond. br>I suppose Weller is a snobby company that only stands behind products worth more than $300. br>To get this thing to reach a temperature high enough to melt solder, I'd have to bang the handle against my workbench. br>Then it got so hot that I couldn't hold on to it with my bare hand, and the handle and entire plastic housing began to melt, rendering it useless. After a month of moderate use, this is the result. br>That 50-dollar piece of junk's only ergonomic feature. I was hoisting it into the garbage can with the power cord. br>Weller, keep up the excellent work!.

This is an untrustworthy piece of garbage
3/5

I have a Radio Shack Archer 100W that I purchased 30 years ago. I'm still going to be able to make it work. In fact, I had to use it today because neither this Weller nor the other Model 8200 that I own could get hot enough to melt my top-of-the-line solder. I'm not sure how these people manage to make a living selling junk. It's a risky purchase. Also keep in mind that the power cable on this one is so stiff that you won't be able to move the gun as freely as you'd like. Another enhancement by Weller.

Weller 9400PKS Universal Soldering Gun Kit, 120V Dual Heat 140/100W Background information: I'm a hobbyist, not a pro, but I've done a lot of soldering in my time
4/5

br>br>I purchased this product because I own a used motorcycle that the previous owner, in my opinion, did not wire properly. He installed led lights (front and back) without any resistors, resulting in hyper flash, as expected. He also installed a fender eliminator kit on the back, leaving me with no place to put my license plate (he removed that part). To cut a long story short, I believed the entire situation needed to be redone. So I did. br>br>I have a soldering iron that looks like a pen/screwdriver that I bought years ago and never thought worked very well. I decided I needed a new soldering iron because I was determined to rewire the entire rear end of the motorcycle. Because some of these connections would be under my rear fender, I turned to YouTube for ideas on how to make my wiring stronger and weatherproof. I came across a video by the user Wranglerstar in which he recommended this product; I had seen his videos before, so I took a chance and ordered it. br>br>I must say, I'm very impressed! This is a fantastic product, and mine does indeed heat up in less than six seconds. I used flux, solder, silicone auto paste, and shrinkwrap tubing to wire up all of the connections. Everything works, looks, and performs admirably, and I've had no problems whatsoever. I only gave it four stars because I believe it could be better. In this case, the gun does not have a stand built into it to allow it to stand while heating or cooling. It had a minor flaw that I noticed while using it.

It's absolutely fantastic
5/5

I had already purchased two other cheapos and needed this one to finish the project. It's absolutely fantastic. Don't waste your money on low-quality goods. This is the only one you'll ever need. It's also quick.
