Is the plastic food-safe?

Is the swivel connection to the pump protected by a bevel washer?

I'm not sure (it's been a while), but the ferrule appears to have come with the pump.

Is it possible to get rid of the wire mesh filter?

Yes, this is possible. I actually replaced the screen on the new unit with the old filter. The reason for this was that the new filter's connections were leaking. They weren't the right ones, and replacing the water lines would have been too much of a hassle.

Is it possible to use pex directly on the barbed end or will another type of fitting be required?

Yes, pex can be applied directly to the barbed end. You are not in need of another fitting. I hope you find this information useful.

Barb isn't a good fit for sharkbite PEX

The barb that comes with it will not fit into any of the 1/2' pex piping I've tried it with. I'm not sure if it's a bad product or if it's a defective unit.

It is designed to work with the SHURflo Revolution 4008- 171- E65/A65 is a fantastic pump! It's simple to disassemble and clean, and it doesn't require the use of plumber's tape or tightening tools to achieve a perfect high-pressure seal on the pump inlet. The design is fantastic. Make sure you don't buy tubing that is actually 5/8" (which many companies call 1/2") because the outlet barb is a true 1/2" OD.

This is a very attractive package. I use them in two different systems, and they both function well. I wish the basket was a little bigger, both in terms of capacity and accessibility. But it's a fantastic unit in general.
