Preamer 4Pcs 1/4 Hex Shank Carbon Steel Wood Work Plug Cutter Power Tool

There is no taper on this plug. With the 1/2 plug cutter and a drill press, I cut plugs in a 3/4" white oak plank. Here are some of my thoughts:
- There was a lot of burning or smoke at 650 rpm.
- There was still some burning at 340 rpm, but it was significantly reduced.
- The 650 rpm plug is on the left, while the 340 rpm plug is on the right in the attached photo.
- I thought the cutter was very dull, and cutting the oak without burning was difficult.
- The cutter cuts a straight plug, and when measured with a micrometer, the 1/2" plug was cut accurately from top to bottom (see photo).
- The 3/8 shaft is very sturdy and grips the drill chuck well.
- I assumed the cutter was tapered by mistake, but after reading the description again, I see that it is not.

I failed to notice this and drove at a high speed, resulting in smoke and stalls. It was entirely my fault. The Wen 8" drill press's speed was reduced to its minimum of 740, which solved the problem. The walnut is being drilled. I chose to cut in spurts because I was able to cut out plugs with little smoke and the drill did not stall as it did at higher speeds. I've only used the 3/8" and 1/2" sizes so far, but they work well.
