I bought a 17MF drill press off Craigslist and everything appeared to be in working order, except for the fact that it was missing the drift key or "wedge. " I discovered it was an MT2 style taper and chuck after looking through the online manual. Instead of paying $30 for a complete set of keys, I was able to locate and purchase this single wedge for about a third of the price. br>br>This item is made of good steel, and it took me about 5 minutes to separate the chuck from my drill press (I spent 4 minutes and 55 seconds looking for my hammer). The chuck let go of the drill press in seconds after I aligned the slot in the collar, inserted the wedge, and tapped it three times with my hammer. br>br>If you have an MT2 taper, this wedge or drift key should fit your needs perfectly. This book comes highly recommended.
It's flimsy, but it gets the job done. I was unable to locate one in any of the nearby stores. As a result, I had to purchase something online. br>It works. That's all I have to say on the subject. I wouldn't want to use it frequently because I don't think it would last; however, I only needed it once, so it served its purpose.
This drift key was purchased to be used with my MT2 pieces. It is, however, far too limited. Instead of being released, the part simply slides through the small elongated window. The female MT2 in my case is a 4 inch extension for my wood lathe, and the male MT2 is a drive spur for holding work between centers.
My Delta drill press from the 1940s was used for this. It's a small tool, but it makes chuck removal on a drill press a breeze. If your drill is capable of doing so. One tap. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for old Chuck.
(Which is too small to wedge the morse taper out of the lathe quill. ) The description does not specify how wide it is.
My drift, for some reason, drifted away. br>This replacement was reasonably priced, and I immediately put it to use on my lathe when I needed to separate a mt2 extension from a live center. br>I use a rare earth magnet to hold it to my lathe. br>Prime's two-day delivery was extremely beneficial in resolving my problem.
Work is being done quickly. I assisted in the removal of a 20-year-old MT drill spindle from a drill press.
