It takes about 4 gallons of water to run the machine. Yes, I filled the water chamber with ice. Because there is no automatic shutoff, I am confident that if you let the pump run dry, it will burn up. Additionally, the membrane must be dried by running the unit on fan only for at least 1/2 hour after use. Others have complained about their water smelling, but I'm sure it's because the membrane wasn't properly dried after use. I have mine set on a timer so that when I'm done with it and switch it to fan only, it shuts off after half an hour.
Place the wheels in front of the unit with the "brake" on them. Using a cloth, lightly tap the surface. To secure them in place, use a covered hammer or a rubber mallet. I hope this information is useful.
I get about 3 to 4 hours out of it as well; I simply run it until I hear water dripping inside, then add more water.
To "unlock" the door, you must slightly press down on the protruding tab.

It's only been a few months since I've had it. Although I did not purchase this through Amazon, I decided to do so because no one had reviewed it on this site. Since 1995, I've owned four swamp coolers, and this one is by far the best. It's only been a day since I got it. br>br>The Arctic Cove 350 model was the most recent unit. After one year of use, it leaked, sucked air through its flow control valve around the same time, and died after three summers, it was time to replace it. br>br>At work, I used Arctic Cove models 500 and 700 - I used to think that upgrading would be a good idea, but I will never buy that brand again. br>br>The output of this Hessaire is 1300cfm (the Arctic Cove model numbers correspond to the output in cfm). I'll lower my rating if it disappoints me, but for now: This is a genuine swamp cooler with no gimmicks. The fan is far enough away from the filter media that it shouldn't be an issue, and the reservoir can be topped off while the unit is running, so there's no need to turn it off and remove the reservoir to refill. Of course, this means it will require more maintenance, but if you don't know what swamp coolers are, you should either educate yourself or avoid the genre altogether. br>br>However, I have two reservations based on my first impression - The drain plug appears to be a likely future point of failure (leakage), and the control switch feels incredibly cheap and flimsy. There is only time to tell. br>br>I was afraid I'd break the entire unit because two of the wheel casters were so difficult to push in. br>br>However, if you live in a royal hotbox like I do and don't like paying hundreds of dollars for AC electricity, this thing (again, with only one day of ownership but years of swamp cooler experience) appears to be a winner. br>br>7th EDITION- 2018: This device is working as expected. I've drained it twice now (not out of necessity, but to inspect) and have had no problems with the drain plug as previously mentioned. So far, this is the best swamp cooler I've had. On the high setting, it DOES use a lot of water, but the low setting is still better than anything else I've owned and lasts 8 hours. At this point, I only have a few criticisms - It is difficult to close the "door" for reloading water. To avoid breaking the "latch," I'll have to be cautious. I also wish there was a timer mode for the 30-minute "airing out" of the filter media after it is turned off. However, if this thing continues to work as well in the summer of 2019, I will gladly upgrade my rating to five stars.
Customer Service / Warranty that is already in place. As others have mentioned, this is a good evap cooler, but it is quite noisy. Personally, I am unconcerned about this. The water pump, on the other hand, failed after only four months, so I'm not sure how reliable it is. Warranties and customer service are both bogus, i. e. non- existing. I've emailed and submitted a warranty request for the pump at least a half-dozen times and have yet to receive a response. They don't have a way to track or follow up on any of your previous requests through their online system.
This is a fantastic device. Yes, as other reviewers have noted, the plastic is a little flimsy, but so what? It sits there and performs far better than I expected. br>br>I work in a shop that doesn't have any insulation or air conditioning. From June to September, the temperature regularly exceeds 100 degrees. For the past 30 days, we've had temperatures of 100°F or higher. As I type this, the temperature is 100 degrees. This cooler is placed under my desk, facing me, and it keeps my legs, arms, and neck nice and cool. Right now, my legs are almost too cold to bear. For comparison, I used to keep a small LG portable air conditioner ($350) under my desk. My crotch was the only part of my body that was kept cool by that device. When the temperature in here reached 100 degrees or higher, the air conditioner overheated and began cycling on and off until I left work (about 2 or 3 hours). As a result, it switches from blowing cold air to blowing hot air on me. It's also gotten progressively worse. Usually 2 minutes cold, then 10 minutes hot. It's not a pleasant experience. My contacts always dried out because of the dehumidified AC and the hot air blowing on me, so I had to use clear eyes several times every afternoon. Because I am hot and sweaty, my arms would stick to my desk as I type. It is disgusting. br>br>My favorite feature of this cooler is that it increases my energy levels by keeping me much cooler. Every summer, I'd return home exhausted from a day spent in the sun. My portable air conditioner was turned on at the time. I haven't felt wiped out since I started using this evap cooler. I'm free to return home and, if necessary, continue working around the house. This is without a doubt one of the best purchases I have ever made. br>br>I got the idea for this when I went into a store and saw it running in the front room. The front room was approximately 25'x25' in size, with two open doors leading to separate hallways. They checked their thermostat and informed me that this unit had reduced the room's temperature by ten degrees. It was nice and cool in there, and I'm sure it was a lot less expensive to run than turning on the air conditioner to drop the temperature another 10 degrees.
This was purchased for my patio, which receives 116 degrees during the summer. br>I was surprised at how cool it got that day. br>Easy to set up at a reasonable price. br>Water capacity: 5 gallons (largest I found)br>Best of all, you can fill it with a water hose using the included adapter, so there's no need to worry about running out of water.
UPDATE ON CALIFORNIA I read a lot of mixed reviews on here, but the majority of people were very happy with their coolers, so I decided to give it a try. I just received my new cooler and was surprised at how simple it was to set up. I had no trouble putting the wheels on or opening the door to fill it up, and it was easy to move from room to room. I am a 60-year-old woman, by the way. My main concern was finding a suitable location for it. So far, I'm impressed with how quiet the unit runs and how quickly it cooled down my large living room. The only drawback is that the settings on the dial are small and blurry, making them difficult to see. br>When it gets to 90 degrees here, we'll see how it holds up, but for now, I'm very pleased. So I don't have to worry about it running out of water, I connected it to the bathroom sink. My 24X24' living room, which is on the west side of the house, is kept comfortably cool by it. br>The only complaint I have is that the dial is difficult to see and is unsightly, but it works, and this is the first summer in which I have been able to enjoy my living room. UPDATE: It's been in the high 90s for the past few days; I'm still in love with my cooler; the performance increased in tandem with the heat, and it's still incredibly cool!.
