I'm not sure what the filler is made of, but it feels like styrofoam to me, which is why sleeping on it is difficult. I'm not sure if it's been treated with any chemicals or flame retardants.
I think so, but I haven't done any research to back it up. No moisture has been found beneath the surface.

As you can see in the photo, I use these mats to sleep on with my shikifuton and to sit on during the day with my zabutons. The mats are about a half-inch thinner than traditional flooring, but that doesn't take away from their comfort. I should also mention that they are significantly thicker than the majority of mats available on Amazon and elsewhere. The grass has a wonderful smell and feel to it (to my taste). Now, I should point out that the grass smell was initially stronger, and now you can only get a good whiff by putting your nose right up against the mat. These mats have a foam interior, making them light and springy to step on. They fold up for easy transport and can be sized to fit your needs. The underside has a grip that hugs the floor and keeps moisture and sliding at bay. These are the best option for the money if you want something that is comfortable, easy to store and move, and provides enough coverage to be used with a twin size shikifuton and kakebuton.
so value. Just leaning on it with a knee, I've already broken in one spot. I am not impressed at all. I intend to return. —br>br>Very strong odor. br>br>—br>br> I've slept in a full tatami bed before, both in the United States and in Hong Kong, and these mats stink. I'll probably have to air them out, but I don't want bugs inside. br>br>They're also very light. My previous set was so heavy that I couldn't even lift them. These are incredibly light, so I'm not sure how long they'll last, but it was a pleasant surprise. br>br>Price was reasonable. I believe it is overpriced for the weight, coloration, and decorative aspect on the side. My Japanese ones had a very posh appearance. br>br>The foldable feature is fantastic, so I guess it's a win-win situation. offs. You could do worse, I suppose, if this is a price point you're comfortable with. br>br>The only odd thing is that the coloration in the center is much greener than the edges—almost as if they'd already been slept on. I'm sure they're brand new, but it seemed strange. Look at the image below. That isn't a shadow at all. That is the hue. After a few years of use, my previous set finally looked like this. (They're supposed to start out green, so who am I to say).
For several reasons, I am even happier with this than I expected to be: It's lighter and more durable than expected, folds up easily for transport, and comes with a zippable carry-on bag. It smells great (naturally), and the overall craftsmanship is excellent. I found it to be very comfortable to use under my sleeping bag, and I expect it to be even more so once my shikibuton arrives. I could have gotten a fancier one from another company for a lot more money, but I'm glad I didn't.
br>br>Backgroundbr>I had never used a tatami mat before, except for a couple of nights in Japan, and I was unsure if I could sleep comfortably on one on a daily basis. I wanted to live in a smaller space and with fewer possessions. So, this is a FULI futon that I got. This is a bit pricey for me, but it appears that every brand is. br>br>Mattbr>When I first got the mat, it smelled like grass, so I let it air out for a few days. The grass smell persists to this day, but I don't mind. The appearance appears to be of good quality, with a neat and tidy appearance. There were no loose threads when it was put together. The color is primarily greenish, with a hint of yellow at the edges. Over time, they are said to change color from green to yellow. It's light and firm, and it keeps the cold floor beneath you at bay. br>br>Sleepbr>The first night, I was taken aback by how comfortable it is to sleep in. I thought it would be much more of a change if I didn't realize I could mistake it for a bed. On my side/stomach, I slept extremely well. My FULI futon, on the other hand, is a little wider and shorter than this matt. This isn't the end of the world by any means. I awoke feeling a little different than usual, perhaps a little sore - This is a sign that you're adjusting to your new surroundings. I continued my test for the next few nights, sleeping as normal or better than normal, with no soreness or other unusual side effects. br>br>Summarybr>In the morning, it takes me about 1 minute 30 seconds to put the matt away. In comparison to the heavy restrictions that come with a large immovable bed, I find this to be very satisfying. I can adjust my space more easily, and I sleep very comfortably on it. I believe that if I had a full size, I would be able to sleep with a partner as well. Despite the high cost, I am extremely pleased with my matt.
The mat is one of my favorites. The smell was initially quite strong, but it mellowed out after a few days, and I now prefer it. I've never had one of these before, so sleeping on it and the futon is a new experience for me. It was a little more difficult than I had anticipated, but I'm getting the hang of it. Overall, I'd prefer this to a regular mattress because I know I'm supported with this setup, which is great for my back. This is something I would recommend to anyone looking for a very firm sleeping surface.
It's simple to fold and carry. It is highly recommended for those who are unable to sleep in normal beds. I take it with me wherever I stay at an Airbnb. It's either on the bed or on the floor for me. incredibly relaxing. It also has an anti-slip bottom to keep it in place. If you sleep on your stomach, the thickening is ideal. I don't usually write reviews, but my mother and I are big fans of this product, and I'll post some pictures later.
This product appeals to me because of its light weight and foldability. But it's proving to be more difficult than I had anticipated. My old back prevents me from sleeping on it. The dry- The grass has a strong odor. Nonetheless, I find it appealing. I'm glad I took the plunge and purchased it.
