It is not necessary to use any chemicals. The compressed bag will have a slight odor because it arrives compressed, but this will fade after a few hours of drying in the sun.
This product has not caused me to become chemically sensitive.
However, you could a. I believe the Japanese have figured out why a tatami is best. It raises the futon off the ground (away from ground water), allows for more breathing and heat regulation, and provides cushioning.

This is a very appealing, comfortable, and traditional Japanese-style room. The shiki futon is a Japanese style futon. The fabric on the outside is 100% cotton, while the inner stuffing is polyester. The dimensions of the XL Twin size that I purchased are as follows: 3 in. thick, 39 in. wide (3'3"), and 83 in. long (6'11"). br>br>This futon is compressed and delivered in a vacuum-sealed bag. bag that has been sealed When the plastic bag is opened, the futon mattress springs out and returns to its original dimensions in a matter of seconds. When I first unpacked this mattress, I didn't notice any chemical odors coming from it. br>br>If you want to roll up this mattress and store it when it's not in use, you'll need to buy a roll-up mechanism separately. I don't have to roll up and store my futon mattress every morning anymore because I have enough available space to leave it unrolled during the day. br>br>Please keep in mind that this futon does not come with a washable or removable cover. It's important not to put this mattress directly on the floor if it doesn't have a cover like that, as this will cause it to become soiled. Because I don't have a cover for my futon mattress, I use a sheet to keep it from touching the ground. br>br>In Japan, a full futon set includes a mattress like this (shikibuton, "spreading futon"), a duvet-style cover (kakebuton, "covering futon"), and a mat (tatami) on which the mattress is placed. If desired, a similar sized yoga mat can be used as a tatami for this particular futon mattress. br>br>To prevent mold and dust mites from growing in the mattress, futons and their covers must be aired on a regular basis. Currently, I'm using a double layer of sturdy, 100% cotton, flannel, flat sheets on top of this futon mattress in stead of purchasing a mattress pad in order% I place my sleeping sheet on top of the flannel sheets' protective layer. Furthermore, I flip this mattress over every night, which allows each side to air out on a regular basis during the 16 hours I am not sleeping on it. However, this strategy only works if you don't have to roll up your futon every morning to make room for it.
For many years, I lived in the far east, where I slept on tatami mats and beds that looked like smooth wooden tabletops. I've been sleeping on top of a pile of blankets on a tatami mat resting on a steel bed frame recently. It's a little sloppy, difficult to air out, and has a tendency to bunch up, so I decided to try one of these twin size futons with a cover from the same company. They have a good reputation. I was surprised at how much like a foam mattress this one feels when I first got it. This has a more floating feel than the pile of two or three blankets, and my hips and shoulders sink into the futon a little (which does not happen with a pile of blankets). As a result, it feels unique, as well as distinct from a traditional futon filled with cotton batting. Nonetheless, it's quite comfortable, and I've been sleeping well on it for a few days, so I'm going to keep it for a while and see how things go. I'll definitely keep this as a guest bed if I go back to the blankets.
br>I used this product directly on a carpeted floor in the Japanese style and discovered that the pain was gone! br>This may be because I am a native Japanese living in the United States, but you should not experience any discomfort in your body when turning around while sleeping on it because it is firm enough to support your body. More body motion is required to change your sleeping position on a fluffy mattress, which can result in back pain. Similar Shiki Futons can be found on Amazon, but the majority of them are not made in Japan. I strongly advise you to buy all of your products made in Japan because they are always well-designed and well-thought-out for end-users.
This is the second time I've slept in this particular room. I bought the first one for my camper van a few years ago. They are very clear when they tell you to air this bed out, but I fell behind and it became mildew stained, which I was unable to remove. I tossed it in the trash. I just got a new one about three months ago and I'm in love with it. I sleep with a buckwheat hull pillow, and it's the best sleep I've ever had. I have back problems, so the firm ground with just enough cushion to keep my bones safe is the best place for me to sleep. My weight is 245 pounds, and I am 49 years old. Because I am overweight, I recently purchased a platform bed from Japan and am still waiting for it so that I can raise my futon 12 inches off the ground and have better air ventilation. This bed is my favorite. I recently discovered that I must air it out twice a month in direct sunlight. It was a good lesson.
When I first picked up the product box, I thought to myself, "No way. " This is far too light to hold my weight. I expected to be uncomfortable for a night, but I ended up returning it the next morning. That wasn't the case at all. Despite being lighter than my blanket, this object felt very much like the firm mattress I was sleeping on. br>I've gotten two full nights of sleep on it so far, with no pain or discomfort during the night or when I awoke. This is going to take the place of my old bed. It's a fraction of the weight, volume, and cost of the original, and it serves me just as well.
I was suffering from lower back pain, and between stretching and sleeping on this futon, I was able to alleviate it. It was a turning point in my life. It's wonderful to be able to bend naturally and, more importantly, without pain.
I bought it for my snoring husband after hearing about traditional Japanese futon mattresses from a friend who lived in Japan. Anyway, the mattress had a fresh scent to it, which was my first impression. There are no strong chemical odors. So we gave it a try and found it to be extremely comfortable as well as attractive. I'm thinking about getting one to put on top of my mattress. Hah! My husband loves it and sleeps so well in it that a few of his coworkers have expressed interest in purchasing one after hearing about it from him. My Japanese friend claims that her futons are still in good shape after 20 years.
It's a well-made futon with a nice appearance. We purchased the twin size and a cover in order to have an extra "bed" when the family gathers. Check the box before tossing it out because you'll get a cute little origami animal (in a plastic sleeve).
