Questions & Answers

What is the material of the cover that comes with this ceramic knife sharpening rod?

It did not arrive with a sleeve when I purchased the diamond plated sharpening rod. However, the handle is equipped with a hole that can be used to hang the ceramic rod since it does not mention a cover. There is probably no need for a cover, however. Since ceramic is harder than steel (MOH = 9), there is no need for protection against scratching. Scrubbing powder (Comet, Bon Ami, etc.) and a sponge or cloth are all that is needed to clean the rod. Due to the fact that it rubs off very small amounts of steel from your knives, the rod surface turns gray with use. You can remove the gray by using scouring powder. There are three grit levels listed for ceramic - 3000, 2000, and 1200 grit Suitable for all kitchen knives, this level of grit is ideal for polishing. Straightening a knife edge is the main purpose of a rod.

Does the sharpening rod have a completely round shape?

There is no doubt that this rod is

For Scary Sharp Knives, the final "stroke" must be taken
5/5

This was even more than what I had anticipated. It's very important to me that my knives are perfect. The appreciation for a truly sharp knife was instilled in me by my father, who worked as a butcher for many years. I currently use a knife sharpening system called Work Sharp invented by Ken Onion. Even though it has performed flawlessly, there is always the voice in the back of my head telling me that a sharp edge can only be finished by running it down My dad taught me the art of ceramics when ceramic rods were not available to the general public. In the end, I have decided to use ceramic myself.

I was completely blown away by the precision and effectiveness of this rod in truing the edge to give an outstanding result. I was not expecting something so robust. "Heavy duty" is definitely the best way to describe it. Its solid handle will keep it from rolling when placed on a flat surface, and its guard will prevent it from rolling as well. You can feel any minute imperfections when you draw the blade down the rod due to the smoothness of the ceramic. After a few passes, it becomes smooth and slippery like a baby's bottom. It is a nice touch that the rod has a tip on the end, although I am not certain I will use this very often. In addition to providing protection for the end, you can stand the rod upright to sharpen your knives, so it will definitely come in handy. It is VERY convenient to have a knife sharpener that will put the FINE edge on your knife for only under $20. Once the knife has been used for a bit, I just run it over the rod for maybe ten or twelve strokes, and the edge is scary sharp again. In addition to my Work Sharp system, I've given my Wonder Wifey Kate some extremely sharp knives and all my other knives -- pocket, hunting, in fact, even my Bowie knife -- are true workhorses. It is definitely worth checking out!.

It's nice to have a ceramic honing and sharpening tool
5/5

Sharpen your knife with this dual-purpose tool. It acts as both a hone (edge straightener) and going to be really dull, you will definitely need a diamond sharpener to prepare it for these high quality This is the right thing to do if a blade is moderately dull and needs to be sharpened. For those of you who do not know how to use a hone or sharpener, this might not be A good job requires you to hold the knife and sharpener at the correct angle and slide the edge upwards or downwards (but not away from) the sharpener to prevent a burr on the edge of the blade This is what I have been using for a couple of weeks now to maintain my kitchen knives, and I cannot believe how much sharper they are By the way, the ceramic hone will pick up metal particles in finer powder form from knives as it is used to sharpen them. As I have used similar products in the past, I expect this. If you want to remove those marks, make a paste of Comet or another abrasive cleanser and water and use a Scotchbrite So long as you do this before the black metal collection becomes too loaded and glazed over, it works pretty well. It is just a matter of scrubbing and rinsing with water to remove the cleanser. As part of your normal regimen, I recommend carrying out this test every few weeks.

Ideal for use in the home kitchen Professionals should not use this
4/5

Added a new carbide sharpening rod to replace the previous one that was well worn. Considering that my go-to knives were long overdue for a good sharpening, I had to do it right away. In my opinion, the Sharal119N is a fairly basic sharpening rod for the kitchen. Because it is heavy, it could be used as a weapon, and I ended up drilling one small hole in my knife block. This rod measures 9 3/4" long, with a 5" handle and a 9 3/4" diameter. The 470" bare foot and the This is because it has a hole in the carbide at 477. The diamond matrix grit is plated in nickel with a 0035" diameter (cadmium?). It is a steel rod welded to a steel tube. An abrasive of medium light strength is used. The user can easily reinstall it It sharpens a knife in good condition with only a few You can use this method for dull knives with no damage, but you will have to grind the edge again. To be clear, this rod as with all carbide rods does regrind the edge, and the amount will vary depending on the pressure and the number of strokes. I would not recommend using this rod for damaged knives, the grit is not sufficient and hard working might shorten its life. There is no need to sharpen anything other than ordinary knives, such as lawnmower blades, pruning shears, or other objects other than knives for use in cooking. The tool is not for hyper sharpening of knives of high value. For knife freaks, this should be off limits. Chefs will find it easy, however, to maintain sharp working knives in the home. Knives that cost less than the sharpening rod are perfectly suitable for such a device. While it has some minor flaws, it's worth checking out. are a few spots where the blade will hang at the edges when sharpening due to a glitch in the grit. You will not notice it while looking down at the blade as it will not feel like it. Rotating the rod slightly and continuing is acceptable for regular sharpening, but for hyper sharpening this would prove deadly. In deciding between the Sharpal and the Knifemaker, the main reasons were that it was round and the right length, and I have experience with carbide sharpeners rods in the kitchen, where it will be used the most.

It was an excellent result

Rubber tip works great on a countertop, allowing me to hone my knives quickly and effectively. I find this ceramic rod to be excellent. It is long enough to perform an easy honing of my 10" kitchen knives, which can be brought to sharpness within seconds. This is the best shear I've used so far. I like the rubber tip on the bottom and it allows me to slip it over my countertop and easily My experience with ceramic rods has been extensive, but this one has been the easiest to use. The rod is smooth, and not coarse. The first thing I do is look down at the sharp edge of the blade and see if any reflections are present, indicating the sharp edge has been rolled over slightly. The moment I see that reflection, I don't need to do much more than stroke this rod to make it all right It is definitely a rod you should consider!.

It is important to know how to use it properly
5/5

I will need to make a tool which keeps the angle constant on every pass since I'm not as good as I used to be 20 years ago. Maybe a devise that rests over the back of the knife so it has and maintains the angle when you run the blade down.

This product is extremely heavy duty and gets the job done well. It only takes a couple of strikes to finish the job. The purchase I made was a very good one. I was pleased with it.
