I measured 3 13/16" from the edge of the shelf to the edge between the shelves so that I could fit small coffee cups. It may be helpful to tell you that I store my mugs on the lipper bamboo dish rack.

The top unit can't be stacked if there's nothing to lock it onto the one underneath, I wonder if that's what they mean when they say it's not stackable. The stacking of them without the feature isn't a problem for me. You should note A piece of paper larger than 8 1/2 X 11 cannot be inserted. I bought it as a desk plant stand. The box arrived broken, part of the wood frame came apart at a corner where the dovetail did not look like it had been put together correctly. It doesn't take much wood glue and some clamps to fix the problem. Nevertheless, after seeing this, I was not sure if I wanted to use it with nice dishes in my kitchen, especially if they were ceramic. A useful way to make the most of a small space is as a plant stand. Light bamboo colors are easy to match with similar items, so I imagine it would go well with other bamboo items.

A poor shipping service by Amazon caused the unit I received to be cracked. No packing materials were left over in the box it was shipped in since the box fit exactly around the item.
