Questions & Answers

What are the dimensions of the "rough opening" (hole size to cut in Durock)? Will it fit with my 14-inch studs?

The installation RO dimensions are shown as 13 on the Tlle Redi website. 75" x 17.

If I want the narrow section on the bottom, can I simply flip it over?

Yes, the narrow section at the bottom was installed by me. It appears to be fantastic!

Is there a slight incline to the bottom to allow water to run off?

Yes. The horizontal planes are constantly changing. The smaller compartment can be installed on either the top or bottom of the unit because it is slightly pitched.

What is the distinction between this (part rn1620du) and this (part rn1620d-1)? bi ?

I believe one is just a niche, while the other is a niche with a smaller piece attached for soap bars, razors, and other items of similar size.

If you re-use it, it works great
3/5

This is a very sturdy, durable, and well-made product; however, the picture depicts it as a single piece, and it came in two pieces, as other reviewers have noted. But, as other reviews pointed out, the spacing between the center shelf and the top shelf is different than the spacing between the center shelf and the bottom shelf when the two pieces are put together. To make the spacing identical, I had to remove material from the flange. The flange is also a little thicker than industry standard backer board, which I thought I could easily compensate for with the thickness of the thin set, but it proved to be more difficult than anticipated. The flanges should be much thinner. A kind customer responded to a question I had about using standard thin set (they had done so and it worked fine), but the manufacturer insists on using their expensive epoxy. Some customers complained about the standard thin set in their reviews. It was most likely made with a mold release agent because it was a molded piece. To get rid of it, I cleaned it thoroughly with alcohol, then roughed it up with some coarse mesh sand "paper" before cleaning it again with alcohol. I used Acrylpro adhesive and grout, which worked out beautifully. If it was a single piece (as advertised, with equal shelf spacing), and the flanges were thinner (the same as or slightly less than industry standard backer board), and the surface had a roughened pattern molded into it (such as a knurled or non-knurled pattern), It would have gotten five stars if it had used a different skid pattern.

The plastic is quite thick, so keep that in mind when you're planning
4/5

It turned out to be a satisfactory outcome. I had to plan ahead to avoid making small cuts on my tile job, but it all worked out in the end. To make my mosaic sheet fit without too much fuss, I added 1/2 inch cement board to the vertical side; also, as previously stated, the plastic is quite thick, so plan accordingly when installing. In general, it's less difficult than establishing your own niche. To make sure there was no mold release or anything else on the surface that would prevent the thinset from sticking, I scuffed the interior with 60 grit and cleaned it with alcohol. The black tiles were a hit, but there was still grouting to be done. br>br>After reading a few more reviews, I came up with another idea. My substrate is Hardy backer tile board, which is not 1/2" thick. a phrase similar to 4" As a result, there is a 'bump' when you run the board up to the niche edge. Not a huge deal, but I thickened the thinset and tapered it to the created lip to avoid a sharp angle right at the niche. I backed off on the thinset by about 5-percentage points. The taper isn't noticeable because it's only 6 inches long. The 'two holer,' as another reviewer pointed out, requires a lot of miters and other such things. We liked the glass black tile finish, but it was only available in smaller sizes, so I had to cut 36 pieces to get the coverage I wanted. Overall, it appears to be quite attractive, and the double box design is particularly appealing. If I were to do it again, I'd spend more time thinking about how to incorporate accent tiles into and around it. In your shower, you can create a stylish and functional addition.

WARNING! BUYING THIS PRODUCT IS A MISTAKE! This is a fantastic concept
3/5

pre- It's a waterproof niche that's ready to go. In reality, it's a disaster. br>br>The installation went smoothly, but the tiling was a different story. And it wasn't because the thinset wouldn't stick to the plastic. It's awful because it has rounded corners, and flat tiles with rounded corners don't work. My contractor spent a significant amount of time trying to make the tile look decent around the edges. The final product is barely acceptable because of the cuts made. Save money by purchasing a product with flat edges that can be used with tile.

Consider the following points
3/5

We're returning this set, but there are a few things we noticed that might be helpful to some buyers. I'm giving them a three-star rating because they appear to be well-made. As you can see in the photo, the taller one is the only one with a textured finish, while the other two have a smooth finish (which some people have complained about making it difficult to get the tile to stick). They are to be sanded, according to the instructions. So either sand the two smooth ones and leave the textured one alone, or make them all textured. After they've been tiled, the large pump bottles won't fit in the medium-sized unit. Unless you want to put a drink up top to sip on while you shower, you'll need the taller unit, which is very large and has a lot of wasted space. ) I hope this information is useful!.

These types of suggestions are extremely effective
5/5

There are a couple of things to keep in mind. 1. br>br> They come in two pieces that can be arranged in any way you want. One has a small niche attached to it, while the other does not. They can function on their own. For example, when I went to buy this, I wanted a small niche at the bottom, but it was out of stock, so I bought the one picture here, knowing that they were separate and that I could simply switch them to look the way I wanted. br>br>2. To help thinset adhere better, scuff them up a little with sand paper. I'm sure it would work without, but I felt more comfortable doing it this way. Reviews claiming that it does not adhere to regular thinset are false. Either they're mixing it too thinly or they're using the incorrect type. It works well with a nice smooth peanut butter that holds its shape. 3. br>br>4. br>br>5. br>br>6. Make certain you have blocking in place all the way around. top, bottom, and center Make sure all seams and screws are caulked as well. 4. br>br> Make sure you've thought about how you're going to trim the edge. Pencil tiles work best, but they aren't cheap, which adds to the cost. These are wonderful. br>br> I'd buy it again without hesitation.

I bought these for a DIY shower install and they weren't perfect, but the value on two of them made it worth the money
5/5

The only disadvantage is that they appear to be extremely adaptable. Even with a fully framed installation and some adhesive to grab the drywall on the backside, the interior movement continued. I used the most adaptable thinset I could find and have had no problems so far. If I run into any problems, I'll update this review. The framing was simple, and the boxes were already angled to allow for proper water flow. After doing some research online, I thought I might be able to make my own niche using just the membrane and some basic framing and hardiboard, but these made it much easier, and the sizing turned out to be perfect for our larger shampoo and soap bottles.
