yes. They should tile straight to the niche after flushing it with the backerboard and applying redguard over the seam.
The shelf's outer dimensions (without the lip) are roughly 13 in x 29 in, which is the minimum rough-in size.
They go between two studs and on top of the dry wall in the same way that shower backer board does.
It has a 16-inch center spacing and is designed to fit between standard studs.

Because it was mostly made of styrofoam core with waterproofed surfaces, I was a little disappointed with the product. During installation, I was concerned that I would puncture or crack it. In addition, I've noticed that the shelves are not angled into the tub as they should be in all niches. I'm hoping this won't have a long-term negative impact. The product is functional, but it raises some concerns for me.
Creates two tall shelves; however, because the middle piece is adjustable, you can customize the size of each. The tile guy had never seen anything like it before, but he figured it out quickly. In the middle, I placed an adjustable shelf. Will fit tall bottles on both shelves, which is exactly what I needed. Obviously, the shower isn't finished yet:.
These are incredibly simple to install, and the tile adheres to them just like cement board; when you're finished, you're completely water sealed, which I like; and the fact that they're not plastic and are the same thickness as cement board was incredible; you don't have to feather mastic like you would with plastic ones. So far, I've completed three bathrooms with them, with two more to go. I strongly suggest it.
Works great, is simple to put together, and provides a great place to keep my enemies' skulls in my shower.
Around the corners, there is a lack of silicone/glue. Even though thinset and tile will cover it, I used my own adhesive to seal it before installing the tile. This will fit right in if you measure and cut carefully. My durock is flush. Without touching the sheet rock, the product leaves enough space in the back. It's a good deal, but it's a little more delicate than the plastic ones. Finally, plastic niches are impenetrable and will never be breached. It's all glued together in this one. I had to go with this particular size because I needed it.
Excessively expensive. The dimensions aren't exactly what they seem to be. I purchased them based on the stated depth of 4 1/2", when they were actually 4" with the surround, making the pocket depth 3 1/2". For this price, they're also cheaply made, and I'm stuck with them because it's Thursday and we've been waiting on these to continue timing, which must be completed by the weekend. Not happy.
It may not appear to be much, but it serves its purpose - It's a lot easier and faster than defining a niche.
"I usually just build one of these in the wall," my contractor said skeptically when I showed him this product. "It's worth noting that the middle shelf can be moved. " We didn't want it to be in the middle.
