Questions & Answers

Is it possible for this seat to remain in the down (open) position if no one is seated in it? Is it, on the other hand, able to stay folded without falling open?

The seat remains in its original position. You are free to get up and down whenever you want. There are no springs, so it won't change position until you tip it upward, which is safe for your fingers. Teak is the type of wood. It works well in wet areas and requires no additional effort on your part.

What is the width of the seat from the wall when it is folded up?

5/8" tall at the top, 3" tall at the bottom - measured. The seat is able to fold up to a height that is higher than vertical.

How far apart are the mounting holes horizontally from center to center?

I looked at a few. The center to center measurement is 16 inches, and they provide nice stainless steel screws.br> This is a high-quality item.

This is something I'd like to put in a corridor. Do you have any drywall-related concerns? Is this compatible with studs that are 16 inches on center?

The mounting holes are exactly 16" o. in the back of the wall mounting frame, JSFEcho. The portion of metal that attaches to the wall is in the shape of an L, as you can see in the photo. Just above the seat, the flush-to-the-wall portion of this L is 2 1/2" wide, increasing to 3 1/4" above. In total, there are 6 holes in the back L, three on each side. As a result, the 6 holes and wide metal L help to distribute the forces exerted when sitting on a large surface. When you sit, the bottom of the L on the wall compresses against the wall, while the top pulls away. As for any concerns about drywall, they apply to the compression on the bottom, and the answer is yes and no. Drywall is not the most dense material, so if you are really You can mount this over drywall and it will work fine for the rest of the population. I am a contractor, so I will caution you as per MFR install information, understand that these s You must take precautions to ensure that no water piping, electric wires, or other potentially hazardous materials are hidden behind your mounting location. simply because the wood is 16" in diameter does not imply that it is safe to drive a long screw into the wall. In conclusion, this seat has been designed to be as "easy" to install as possible, but it does require some common sense. If you find yourself in a situation where you don't know what you're doing. enlist the assistance of a local. However, I believe that, with some caution, this is a project that even the most inexperienced handyman can complete.

This isn't just a shower cap
5/5

My 84-year-old father has trouble getting his shoes back on without sitting down because our shoe area is located in a hallway. This is exactly what I was looking for. It has a lot of weight to it and is very steady. It only took six screws to put it together. Both a hallway and a shower would benefit from this design.

It is well-made
4/5

It's appealing, but you should seek advice before purchasing. I bought it from Amazon Warehouse for just under $200. The item was brand new in every way as is true 99% of the time with Amazon Warehouse. As is true 99% of the time with Amazon Warehouse, the item was brand That is certainly the case for me, and I frequent the Warehouse. Exceptionally well-made. br>br> Strong. Should be able to outlast me. It's a good size, but keep in mind that it needs to be screwed to studs on a 16" center. You might argue that it's not a big deal because every house has 16" centered studs, which is correct, but it's not the real issue. The real issue is getting your studs to line up with where you want to put it, which is usually in the middle of a shower end wall. To put it another way, find the center point of where you want to hang it, then see if you have a wall stud 8" to the right and another 8" to the left of that mark. Is that really the case? Not. Install backing boards on the wall opposite the shower? A few spanning 2x's (redwood, cedar?). ) screwed to the non-cooperative vertical wall studs (the seat then screwed to the horizontal boards) inside the shower? In fact, we're talking about a product that's best suited for new construction, and even then, we're talking about holes in the shower wall. br>br>The teak is unfinished, dull or flat depending on your preference, and coarse, and will weather to a rougher gray if left untreated. I'm going to use Danish oil (which I have on hand) or teak oil (which I'll have to buy) to give the wood a sheen and soften it slightly. Either will need to be reapplied on a regular basis. Another reviewer used polyurethane, which is debatable (google teak, water, and finishes to see why); however, keep in mind that boating applications (of which there are many) involve a lot of uv trauma, which should not be an issue in your shower. In any case, I'm going to remove the boards before oiling them in order to ensure long-term consistency and better protection. This is probably overkill for an oil, but if you go with poly or varnish instead of oil, you should seriously consider doing the same because the finish won't bind to the frame and you'll end up with a series of invisible lines (at least at first) that lead to water seeping through the poly or varnish. Finally, the frame, which is why I only gave this thing four stars. It is, in fact, sturdy and well-made. There are no rough edges or paint flaws, and the machine is in good working order. The paint, on the other hand, is a major stumbling block. When I saw the photo and saw that the frame is made of aluminum, I imagined a polished metal frame, similar to the stainless in my new master bath. No. Paint has been applied to the frame. Grayish silver. Powder coated, at least on the surface. Again, it's nice enough, but it doesn't go with anything in a typical bath. And, unless you have a bathroom the size of a living room, this will be one of the most noticeable features. br>br>So, if your wall studs are exactly where they need to be, gray (as opposed to metal and soon-to-weather teak) fits your motif, and drilling six holes in your shower wall is acceptable, this thing is perfect; otherwise, it's a very well designed and well manufactured seat that requires significant tweaking prior to installation.

I really like this shower chair, but it needs to be sealed first
5/5

I'm glad I went with this instead of a permanent built-in bench because it gives me more space in the shower. br>I used Danish teak sealer (not teak oil) to seal the teak, which I purchased on Amazon for boats and outdoor teak furniture. br>I sanded the wood slats first, then roughed them up between coats with a green scotch pad, as directed in the sealer instructions. br>I waited for eight hours. Between coats, wait 12 hours and apply four coats. br>The wood darkened and took on a lovely appearance. The water collects in a nice pattern on the wood.

We are regretting our purchase after two years
3/5

You should be aware of what you're signing up for! When we had our master bathroom remodeled two years ago, we purchased this teak bench, which I now regret. Showers leave a white film on the underside of the bench, which is difficult to clean (our shower is 3' x 4'). At least once a year, we have to remove the bench from the wall to restain the teak, and teak oil stinks for days. This isn't good for me because I have asthma. The odor is also a source of headaches. inducing. And it's a pain because we're literally dismantling it, and I'm worried that by removing the tile for cleaning and staining, we'll strip the wood behind it. br>br>We're about to take it off the wall again, not only to refinish it, but also because there's a mold odor in the shower that we can't seem to get rid of, which we believe is caused by moisture build-up. back behind the scenes Water gets behind it because there's a gap between the slats and I always rinse off the shaving cream when I shave my legs. br>br>I think we're stuck with it because anything we buy to replace it won't cover both sets of holes in the tile, and removing and replacing those two tiles would be expensive, if not impossible. Because it's wider than most benches, we'd be grouting holes in a marbled pattern tile. That's not a look I'd go for. br>br>I strongly advise you to purchase a low-maintenance folding bench. There aren't as many options today as there were two years ago, but it's free, won't allow mold to grow behind it, and is less expensive. I'm still going to call the tile guy and ask for his opinion on the matter. It isn't worth the trouble. It's tough, but it only looks good for a short time before the film starts to build up.

I'm extremely happy with my purchase
5/5

For our hospitality business, we've purchased a total of (5) of these benches, with plans to buy two more. They are of excellent quality. Heavy duty brackets and supports, smooth and splinter-free teak wood seating. The fact that the mounting holes are 16" on-center was appealing to me. You can rely on anchoring directly into studs for a secure mount if you place it in the center. The screws are the only drawback. It appears that they are of lower quality. I had a couple of screwheads wear out (even though I was using a brand new bit), and one of them completely twisted off. Aside from that, this product comes highly recommended.

NOTES ABOUT THE INSTALLATION My mirror was mounted on a bathroom wall, but not in the shower
5/5

I drilled the 1/8 inch hole for the top screws at 30-degrees as a point of reference. 1/2 inch off the ground, giving me a 17-inch clearance. The distance between the floor and the front edge of the seat is 1/2 inch, which is ideal for me. In fact, the screws are 16 inches apart. To find the best height, I measured the heights of other chairs around the house. At the back of the seat, the seat slants down about 1/4 inch. It was too tight for my wife to fold down, so I used a 6 mm hex key to loosen the screws on the side. That was a good idea. I'm thinking about getting another one for another part of the house. In my opinion, it is useful, sturdy, and attractive.
