Selected User Reviews For Caliber 4R Silver Digital/Analog Hygrometer by Western Humidor - The accuracy of digital meets the beauty of analog
It was simple to read and my results were accurate right away! It's an amazing display. The green and red color coding on an analog meter's digital display makes it incredibly easy to read. The needle moves in 1% increments up or down increments increments increments increments increments increments increments increments I used sea salt to calibrate it, and it was only 1% off. br>br>Most reviewers suggest holding your salt in a bottle cap and putting everything in a Ziploc bag for calibration. Using a bottle cap, in my opinion, is a good way to ruin your instrument because the contents are too easy to spill. Here's how I go about it: br>br>In a coffee cup, put 1/2 cup sea salt (not iodized or Himalayan salt). Sea salt is made up entirely of sodium chloride (NaCl). While stirring, gradually add water until the mixture resembles wet beach sand. It won't be much more than a quarter cup of water. In a 1 gallon resealable ZipLoc or other airtight bag, place the coffee cup and the hygrometer. To reduce the air volume in the bag, I prefer to suck out the majority of the air just before the seal is completed. This speeds up the calibration process, and using a cup prevents the salt mixture from tipping over. The salty air in the bag causes humidity to reach exactly 75% after 4 to 6 hours of use. I'm not sure why this is the case; it's just how science works. With the included instructions, calibrating the hygrometer is a breeze. It adjusts up or down in 1% steps in either direction, up to 6% in either direction. It's best to calibrate the instrument before opening it up, while it's still in the bag. It only takes a few seconds and can be done all the way through the bag by pressing one button and then another. br>br>In addition, the thermometer appears to be accurate. 73 was the number on my calculator. The temperature is 4 degrees F. I used my laser-guided infrared gun to shoot the gauge. The temperature was 73 degrees when I used the red temperature probe.
The hygrometer itself is in excellent working order and performs exactly as it should. I used a Xikar Humidity Bead Gel Jar to test the calibration and it was perfectly calibrated already, because after about an hour in a ziplock bag with the gel jar it I left it in my bag overnight just to be sure and it kept reading at 70%. Then I put it in my humidor and got a good reading of 68%. The only reason I gave the hygrometer 4 stars instead of 5 is that it is true (as stated in the other reviews) that it is very difficult to read if not viewed from an angle (you won't have this problem if it is mounted to the top-of-the-house). My case is a glass case, so I can't mount the lid). It's nearly impossible to approach from the front because of the numerous digital lines. It is also worth noting. I assumed it needed to be calibrated because I mistook the bottom temperature gauge for a humidity gauge, but upon closer inspection, I realized I'd made a huge mistake and completely overlooked the humidity reading line, which indicates the humidity level. For an out-of-the-way location, this is a good investment. the- A hygrometer that is ready to use, accurate, and attractive.
It's been calibrated for the past 36 hours. So far, I've been extremely happy. I spent the last 36 hours calibrating it with the Boveda 75%RH calibration pouch and discovered that it was reading 70%. I added 5 and it has sat at a perfect 2075% since then.
Other reviews mention angle effects and the inability to see the digital "needle" unless looking at the hygrometer "head on. " This is true, but it makes no difference if you open your cigar humidors in front of you, as I do. The instructions state that the unit is pre-assembled, which is incorrect. The device has been calibrated and is ready to use. I put mine in a Boveda calibration pack for 48 hours and discovered that the hygrometer needed adjustment of 2% RH. If your humidor lids aren't slammed shut, the included magnet for case mounting is sufficient. I use this hygrometer in conjunction with the Cigar Oasis digital hygrometer in the lower compartment of my humidors, which is mounted on the inside of the humidor lid.
As a result, I'm going to keep this short. You’ll read reviews about this going from being spot on to being 5 % off. br>br>My personal experience has taught me to be patient. Checking and calibrating a parameter such as humidity will take some time. br>br>I am confident in stating that the instrument I received is correct - 1% of 60 and 80 of 60 of 60 of 60 of 60 of 60 of% It's a non-profit organization. br>br> do you care at this point on a linear scale that the readings really start falling below 40 %, but honestly do you care at this point on a linear scale that the readings It has a difficult-to-read humidity indicator line. br>br> Have you ever tried to read a mercury thermometer? I suppose it's a matter of perspective. br>br>Humidity.
The Caliber 4R is accurate and inexpensive, despite its possibly gimmicky appearance (which has grown on me). Although only time will tell, the readings have been accurate out of the% But I can overlook that because it does what it's supposed to do. br>br>Recent changes: br>br> I currently own five of these (all in silver). Each reader in the Boveda calibration kit reads 100% correct right out of the box. I've tested them for over 24 hours each time, and they're fantastic hygrometers.
Best of luck with the "calibration. " The directions are incorrect or misleading. After listening to the seller moan about being the only one at work because of Covid, etc. , she gives up and sends me a replacement. Both are now uncalibrable because they are different. One reads 72% while using the 75% rh 'Salt Test'. Is it correct to multiply by three? It reads 80% now (24 hours later). Re- calibrate using - 5, right? It now reads 71% rh after 24 hours. This has been going on for nearly a month. br>br>What the hell is going on here?.
The accuracy right out of the box is incredible. The only negative aspect of this unit is that it is difficult to read. However, this is not concealed in any review, and you are aware of it prior to entering. It's still a fantastic piece of machinery. When you open the humidor, you must read it quickly because it is so accurate that it will quickly change from the humidor's measurement to the precise reading for the entire room. I would strongly advise anyone looking for accuracy and style to read this book.
