The question is a good one. When you buy a box of 16, I found them fairly expensive, but when you buy a box of 40 (5x8 bars), it is not as expensive.
In the interim (since May 2018), I have not purchased these. The impression I got at the time was that it was more than just an unfortunate batch There may have been a problem with Amazon's stock rotation. In light of the fact that some of them were "only slightly moldy" and that I threw out other (expensive) Larabars, I decided not to order from Amazon anymore. If others can give you more current information, I would appreciate it.

My recent order for two boxes of sixteen Larabars is in two boxes of 16. These lemon bars are usually really good to me. After opening the first box, I grabbed a bar from the second box a few days ago and took it with me on the go. Upon opening the bar, I was immediately overcome by the smell of mold and threw it away as I did not want my purse to smell this way. Larabars, no matter the flavor, have never been filled with this. As soon as I got home, I opened the box and opened the wrapper of each bar. There was mold on all of them. I had opened the bad box earlier as the use by date was still one month away, however the return date had already passed. I wish I'd opened it sooner. If you plan to return anything, make sure you get it checked out before the return deadline. It might be a good idea to have a look at these, since they are not inexpensive, and if they are not edible, there is a chance to recoup their cost.
