Product Description

katsuobushi is a Japanese word that means "salty fish."

Questions & Answers

Is it possible to shred this into flakes for a topping with a good cheese grater?

Unless it's a very heavy-duty cheese grater, that is. This Katsuobushi is not only my favorite ingredient, but it is also the world's most difficult food. If you're going to buy it, you might as well get a Katsuobushi kezuriki shaving box as well.

Is it possible to shave a portion of a block and keep the rest of the katsuobushi block for later use? Is there any effect on the shelf life if this is the case?

It was for my dying cat, so I bought it. We shaved daily and everything was fine; after he passed away, we shaved for him a few months later and everything was fine; and we discovered the block a few months later and it was moldy. It should be fine, in my opinion, if you seal it in foodsaver bags. We had it in ziploc bags, but we should have used foodsaver bags instead. br>It was still delicious when my son ate it after kitty had left.

What is the shelf life of this product?

Years, based on my personal experience. It is said that you can test the quality of these by gently tapping two of them together, resulting in a muffled bell sound. Before they're sold, they've been dried and aged for six months to a year or more. These are best shaved with a Japanese planar box. I haven't seen anyone do it yet, but given that planars are as hard as a dry piece of hardwood, you could probably get away with using one.

You'll need some tools, to be honest
3/5

I saw Joshua Weissman do it on his YouTube channel and decided to try it myself. If you don't want to buy the tool he uses in his video, you'll have to figure out how to shave this thing because it's as solid as a piece of wood. I used my mandolin and then my OXO Good Grips veggie peeler in the end. The best tool was the peeler, but you could also use a carpenter's lathe. Aside from that, this is going to be the best Miso soup you've ever had.

The following is a review based on my cat's enjoyment of the product
5/5

I purchased it because my cat suffers from lymphoma and I want him to eat. He'd been eating packaged bonito flakes, which he enjoys, so I decided to buy a block and have it freshly shaved for him. When the block arrived, we let him smell it before opening the package. He trailed my son into the kitchen, where he sat and meowed. He ate the shavings with gusto. He devoured a large portion of the meal. He gets his shaves on a daily basis. Greetings, feline! With the truffle shaver, it's simple to shave. My son enjoys doing things for his cat and does so at ten o'clock in the morning: 00 a. m. if it aids in his feeding. br>br>Although the expiration date isn't until 2020, I don't believe we'll need to be concerned. I haven't tried making dashi with it yet, but I plan to do so soon. My second block is ready for him, and I've already sent one to my mother, who recalls my grandmother shaving it for them to eat fresh over hot rice.

I AM SO EXCITED TO SHAVE IT! This may sound silly, but based on the other one in the 3-piece set I already used, I believe it will be delicious
5/5

Traditional production methods and techniques have a lot of value to me, and hopefully this addition of 4-pieces will add to that value. It is revealed that the number 18 is present. The fragrance and taste it gave to the kombu dashi was amazing, even just as a garnish on plain rice made it more enjoyable, and I've eaten rice every day for the past 48 years. So I'm curious as to why I've only recently begun to use this and not earlier.

It's far superior to the dried bonito flakes in terms of flavor
5/5

This is 'the' way to eat bonito. I enjoy making miso soup and have been using dried flakes for dashi, but not as a topping. This is a fantastic addition to any salad. I could eat it as a snack because it has a meatier texture and a smokier flavor than the dried flakes. It comes in a nice package, and I like that it comes in a resealable bag for freezing. More will be bought!.

Much better than it was before
5/5

sliced. Yes, it's pricey, and yes, shaving it and getting the shaver set up correctly is a pain. br>The flavor is much smokier and richer than it was before. Packages that have been shaved and sold in Asian markets. You reap the benefits of your efforts in the kitchen. br>br>And no, it does not appeal to my cat. For me, there's more.

It's authentic and adds some flavor to the dish
4/5

It's clearly the real deal, though my pieces aren't as flavorful because I didn't use a wood planer (I shaved with a micro plane). It has a pleasant smokiness to it and is extremely hard. To make miso soup, I would make dashi. In this case, it will result in a more flavorful product.

Everything boils down to taste
5/5

This is an AMAZING product. That over-smoked, over-salted, under-flavored packaged stuff will never be used again in my house. I'm all for convenience, but flavor and taste are much more important to me, and using this method doesn't take much longer (unless you're cooking for 50). In addition, it is far more cost effective to use.

It's delicious! It took some trial and error to get the right shaving angle, but we now have delicious, fresh bonito flakes

The delivery was made on time. Thank you for bringing this to a wider audience outside of Japan.
