These are also suitable for cats. Some cat food manufacturers sell half the amount of bonito flakes for 2x to 3x the price of the human version. These are what I get, and the flakes are larger, which my cats adore. When they see me take the bag out of the bag, they go insane.
Not on this item, but take a look at some of the others - Hime Dried Bonito Shavings Bulk, Marutomo Katsuo Bonito Flake - Katsuobushi Dried Bonito Flakes, Hime Dried Bonito Shavings Bulk, Marutomo Katsuo Bonito Flake - ingredients are almost identical
Katsuobushi (bonito flakes shaved from katsuobushi) is boiled, heavily smoked, and then dried. There is no salt added, but the sodium content is slightly higher due to the drying process (because the water has been removed). It's similar to concentrated fish) than the bonito fish. However, it is insignificant.
I order three bags at a time, which arrive in a box.

This is what we use to make miso soup. It has a strong fishy odor, but I've tried making miso soup without it, and the bonito flakes are essential; the flavor profile isn't complete without them. br>br>Here's how I make it: br>br> 2 cups water, 2 large pinches of bonito flakes, and 1 piece of kombu, boiled for 3 minutes The time is 4 minutes. Remove the kombu and bonito flakes from the broth and set aside. Remove the broth from the heat source and strain 2 Tablespoons of miso into it. Serve with one chipped green onion. We add a soft boiled egg to make it a little heartier, and it's delicious! br>br>Don't skip the bonito flakes when making miso soup!.
Unfortunately, most cat treats are inedible to diabetic cats, so I had to spend a lot of money to get them. Then I discovered bonito flakes, which turned out to be a lifesaver! Although I am not a fan of the flavor, they appeared to be in excellent condition and arrived undamaged. The shavings are nice and large, and I'm sure they'd be great in a recipe. br>br>If you're buying these for cat treats like I am, don't give up if your cat isn't interested at first. My cat turned her nose up at these several times until I put one in her mouth a few times and she realized it was fish. I believe she was perplexed by the paper-like texture until she realized it rehydrates in your mouth! She is now a huge fan. It's possible that your cat will require some persuasion. I prefer these to freeze dried treats because they are less expensive and come in a larger bag. Flakes of excellent quality.
These bonito flakes are far superior to another brand I bought in a larger-format grocery store. Recently, I purchased a large bag. Because the shavings on this brand appear to be thinner, the flakes melt in your mouth. I also prefer the rich flavor because it appears to be a little more fresh and flavorful than the dry, fishy taste left in my mouth by the other brand. If you're buying bonito solely for your cat, I'd advise against this brand because you can get a better deal with a larger bag of another brand, and because the flakes are so finely shaved, they can almost disintegrate into a million tiny particles if your cat eats them as enthusiastically as mine does.
Bonito flakes are packaged in a large resealable bag. It makes a lovely clear and flavorful dashi when combined with Kombu and water. So far, I've only used the dashi to make miso soup, and the results have been excellent.
But it contains an allergen to which he is allergic. I have no idea what's inside because the entire package is written in Chinese. After a slew of medications and an exhausting amount of time trying to figure out what caused the scabs on my cat's head, neck, and chest, I finally found out what was causing them. I finally had a lightbulb moment in my head. It was the only thing that remained to be questioned. I took this out of his diet, and he hasn't had the horrible skin crud since. His hair was falling out in thick clumps, leaving him with open sores all over his body. It was truly horrible, and I strongly advise you to avoid purchasing food for yourself or your pets if you have no way of knowing what's inside the package. It's impossible for me to say what he was allergic to; it could have been something in the water where the fish was caught. something they used to keep it safe. Who can say? While my cat enjoyed it and it was inexpensive, the time it took to treat him and remove the disgusting scabs was not worth it.
If you live in a low-income, low-brow neighborhood without access to a high-end environment, If you don't have access to a high-end grocery store or an Asian market, ethnic cooking can be difficult. Unless one orders those ingredients online, flavoring fish and seafood dishes will be a challenge. Thank you, Jeff and ex, for bringing this ability to foodies in the twenty-first century. This is my first attempt at using this particular product, and I am so glad I ordered it. With so many brands and suppliers to choose from, I made my decision with caution, reading the reviews after I had placed my order, as is my custom. Who knows if some people got a bad batch, had a hidden agenda, or simply didn't know what they were doing. It was of excellent quality and a good price, in my opinion.
After seeing them on cooking shows and food documentaries, I've been wanting to try bonito flakes for years. I haven't been able to eat smoked fish in many years because the softer versions, I believe, retain far too much salt and other curing products, and I would have horrible physical reactions. I received these bonito flakes and tried one, which reminded me of smoked salmon. I made a cream cheese and bonito flake mixture that tastes like cream cheese and lox but doesn't give me the same bad reaction, which I believe is due to the fact that it's dried. Still has that incredible umami smoky delicate fish flavor, but it's much healthier, in my opinion. I'm not exploding like a "fish" as a result of the cures and massive salt from the softer smoke-cured fish that are popular in the United States. This is much less expensive and will last much longer than any expensive smoked salmon. I'm looking forward to experimenting with it in other ways as well.
The flavor was fantastic, and it wasn't as fishy as I had feared. I had no idea dashi broth was made with this. I had purchased dashi bullion without realizing it could be used for a variety of purposes. Because I don't read Japanese, the instructions were largely useless, but they did include illustrations. (Praise be to YouTube and miso recipes. ) It was unquestionably a wise decision.
