I haven't purchased this item in a while, but there was no orange in the bag the last time I did. In fact, I've never seen this candy with any orange in it.
Because the outer coating on these licorice pastels is susceptible to cracking, they should not be shipped with heavy items. They're quite tasty.

Jelly Belly is the only licorice pastel that comes close to it. I can slum it with some Good 'n' Plenty now and then, but these are my kryptonite: the perfect licorice-to-chocolate ratio. The shell has a nice crispness to it, and the licorice itself is just firm enough, flavorful, and not overly sweet. I had to split the bag into several ziplock bags because I was afraid I'd eat the entire bag in one sitting. I'm serious.
Update: I think I've bought at least 20 of these, and they're always good! br>I frequently purchase a variety of items, but my favorites are the licorice pastels; Good and Plenty are too thick and chewy, and good licorice pastels are difficult to come by year-round (though they are available at Christmas). I had paid $2 more for a no-name version because this one had received poor reviews. The reviews, on the other hand, are completely inaccurate. These clearly came in Jelly Belly bags, are fresh, and have the perfect combination of sweet and licorice covering. Highly recommended!.
This is fantastic. fresh. On the outside, they're crunchy, like a pastel should be, and on the inside, they're chewy black licorice. For whatever reason, this is the only way I enjoy black licorice! I had prime shipping, so it arrived quickly and in excellent condition. I would buy them again in a heartbeat.
I ordered these twice by mistake; they are not Jelly Belly brand, and the bag is plain with no brand; they are not good. The use of a brand image is a clear lie. For the freshest, most authentic Jelly Belly products, I now order directly from Jelly Belly.
I adore licorice and was disappointed to learn that "Good" licorice is no longer available. The artificial licorice flavor used in "Plenty" is actually artificial. I went on a search for a "replacement" and found these. Jelly Belly is one of my favorite brands. Their jellybean flavors are perfect, but I think the licorice candy's candy shell is too thick, and it overpowers the licorice flavor.
It's amazing how picky we can be about something as simple as candy, but I love licorice, and especially licorice pastels, and these are the best. I've tried other brands, and the licorice flavor was weak, and the candy coating was gummy, had an odd texture, and so on. The licorice filling is flavorful and chewy, and the candy shells are crisp. These would be described as 'al dente' if we were talking about pasta. I'm all set to take on another job!.
The licorice pastels that I purchased from Amazon and the jelly belly website are not the same. The ones available on Amazon are significantly thinner. The one I purchased from the jelly belly website has bigger pieces. They both claim to be from Jelly Belly and have the same mailing address. Jelly Belly appears to have a lower-cost version available on Amazon. There's also a difference in the packaging. I'm not going to buy it from Amazon.
It's most likely the sugar content! I've tried almost every type of thin, licorice pastel available from a variety of places. The reds in some of them make you look like you've just applied lipstick; in others, they make you look like you've just done so. It's great if you're a woman and that's your shade, but it's not so great if you're a guy like me who doesn't like to wear lipstick. Many others can develop a tough (rock-like) exterior. When biting, it's a lot like) Every Jelly Belly pastel had a soft shell with just the right amount of firmness. The reds did not adhere to the lips as well as the other brands. It was well worth the money.
