M, which I purchased four and a half years ago, with LifeTime USA Map updates. I recently received an email from TomTom stating that the product is EOL (End of Life) and that they will no longer be updating maps for units older than (5) five years, and that you must purchase a NEW Model with more memory to support their new software. The first TomTom representative I spoke with in Mumbai, India flatly lied to me, telling me that I could update the map on the website. After I went to the website with the unit connected to the computer, the second Mumbai, India representative refused to confirm that the first representative had lied to me; instead, he said I would have to wait for an email announcing the free update, which would be available by the end of the month. He then sent me a series of emails in which he refused to confirm that the update would be available by the end of January 2018, instead stating that future updates would be available. He was only looking for a way out of me. br>I'm not going to buy another product from a company that takes my money, promises LifeTime Map Updates, then backs out and tells me I have to buy a new model. I also do not advise you to do business with the firm. If TomTom does not make the comprehensive update available for free by the end of January 2018, my state's attorney general will take action.
SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DO NOT BUY THIS! You can't even get updates for this product because it's so old. I scoured the internet for hours looking for a solution, but there isn't one. For around $160, you can get the most up-to-date TomTom directly from TomTom's website, and it's well worth it! Yes, it costs a little more, but it will save you countless hours of frustration and accomplishes far more than this one. To begin with, it will update via WiFi, which means you won't have to worry about downloading files to your computer or finding a way to keep it with you at all times. Second, the new Tom Tom will actually update the new maps, so you won't have to worry about whether the street is still there or if it has been moved in the last ten years. Third, the new model includes voice control, which could potentially save your life. Finally, the new one syncs with a Tom Tom app on your phone, allowing you to plan your route on your phone and then enter your car, where it will appear on the Tom Tom. So, instead of buying this or any other old Tom Tom, save your money and get the new me model instead. It is, in fact, significantly superior.
BASIC GPS, GOOD MAJOR URBAN COVERAGE. When the Batt failed on my 6-year-old TT/XM, this Start took its place. It was dependable and simple to comprehend. program. With the Start, I had very similar controls and programs, and I was up and running in no time. Two sub- Routines, which were included with the unavailable XM, are not included with this low-cost excellent GPS. The Route Planning routine, which included Way Points, which were almost mandatory for long trips, and the Auto Shut Down when the ignition was turned off. There are a couple of workarounds for route planning using the Alt Route feature, but they pale in comparison to the Planner's way points, and the Alt isn't saved as a "Favorite. " If you travel by car frequently, make sure you use TomTom Web. br>It appears that TomTom saw the programming change as a revenue generator, pushing you to the top of their product line for the purest. I purchased this item on Black Friday, so I got a great deal. Caution: When the unit arrived, it had Dated Maps that were full of errors. They were reprogrammed for free, but the error still existed, especially outside of a large city. Let the Fisherman and Hunter Beware rural, agri-environment, and State/Fed-controlled parcels coverage should all be checked on a map.
You will be removed from the LIFETIME map feature if you do not update your maps when they ask you to. To be re-instated, you must first clear a number of hurdles. For lifetime maps, a new rule has been put in place. WORSE THAN THAT, the updated US map no longer fits on this device, so you have to choose between western and eastern states. Sorry, but I purchased this device in order to be able to travel throughout the United States. Because I live on the eastern rim of their western map, this item is completely useless to me. When I'm driving east or south, I can't use it anywhere. I'm getting rid of it and replacing it with a GARMIN product. I believe TOMTOM should face a class action lawsuit for devaluing my product after promising me a lifetime map of the United States.
To replace an old Magellan, I purchased this. It sounded fantastic in the reviews, and the price was even better. I also bought it because it came with free lifetime map updates, which I didn't get with the Magellan. The first thing I noticed was that the touch screen isn't very responsive; it's more of a touch-and-hold screen. It takes a long time to start working. I connected it to my computer to update it, as instructed in the accompanying booklet. The update took over an hour. The first (and only) time I used it, I was extremely dissatisfied with the results. Even though I was on an interstate highway and not even close to a city, it kept losing GPS contact. It once went without a signal for over 5 minutes. I'm glad I wasn't driving through a new city at the time; imagine driving 65 mph on the highway and the GPS telling you to turn left in 150 feet. That happened a couple of times. We were stranded on a side road, and the unit was attempting to get us back onto the highway. It's time to start looking for a new compass. This one is being returned. Fortunately, I purchased it through Amazon, so returning it was a breeze.
