Questions & Answers

Is it possible to charge the GPS via USB cable alone? I'm not interested in going through the trouble of connecting the supplied charger to the actual bat. ?

The answers to your questions aren't entirely accurate: yes, it can be charged with a USB cable, which is why one was included. However, I am aware of your query, and the answer is NO! When the GPS is in its cradle, it blocks (inexplicably) the female port where the USB cable plugs in, making it impossible to charge it with the USB cable. I'm not sure why the female wasn't placed on the opposite side of the GPS, but maybe it's to keep water out. A USB adapter is plugged into a 12v cigarette-style port near my dash. They have male USB to alligator clips for sale, which I purchased. Because the cable is so long, I simply cut the wires to the desired length, joined them, and wrapped electrical tape around it to keep things tidy and provide a more hardwired connection. If you wanted to make it even cleaner, I believe there is a sheath you can buy that you can heat up to join the wires. Given that most new bikes have a 12v near the dash, this is far superior to trying to run the wires all the way to the battery.

Will this unit charge via the USB port on my bike? Other Garmin units, as well as aux batteries, will not charge in this manner. ?

Yes, you can charge your phone via USB if you want to. During the testing phase, I set up the unit in my truck. More information can be found in my YouTube review. Garmin 396, Black Swan Odysseys

Is this going to "sync" with my Sena helmet headset?

My Sena 10S is in good working order. Other models I am unable to comment on. The Sena 20S and the SMH10, according to Garmin's website, are compatible with the Zumo 395. On Garmin's website, I couldn't find anything about which headsets are compatible with the 396.

Prepare for a third of your screen to disappear
3/5

To begin with, consider the advantages: br>Nice screen size, and it's tough; I dropped it on hard asphalt a few times and it didn't even scratch. The user interface for navigation is quite good. Like a phone, it won't get too hot and shut down. It is water-resistant. br>br>Contrary to popular belief, there are a number of disadvantages to using this product. br>The Basecamp software is a joke. Nonsensical and perplexing. It's both intuitive and overly complicated (am I planning a trip, laying out a route, hiking?). When you export a route to the GPS, it frequently redoes the route based on device settings, completely disregarding any custom routing you may have done in the desktop app. Keep one eye on it to make sure it doesn't take you down the wrong path. br>The biggest issue, however, is the new "Incident detection" system, which is supposed to pair with a phone and send an SMS to a designated contact if the device detects an accident. Unfortunately, a fruitfly buzzing within 10 feet of your motorcycle triggers this "detection. " Last month, I rode a total of 9000 miles, and the on-road experience was fantastic. The device popup (which takes up 1/3 of your screen) was on for the majority of the time, and there is no way to turn it off, regardless of whether you have a phone connected or an SMS notification number configured. br>br>Apparently, Garmin has promised to fix this in a future update, so you might want to hold off until then. Alternatively, search the advrider forums for tips on how to use a rugged $50 phone.

It's adequate, but not Google Maps
3/5

Because I prefer to keep my phone close to my body, I like having a GPS on my motorcycle. That's partly because I might need my phone if my machine and I become separated (which has happened) and partly because I've accidentally drowned two iPhones while navigating in the rain. My two previous Zumos had stopped working (! ), so I bought this one. ) and this one had new features at a price I could stomach, if not warmly embrace. It takes some time to get used to. You'll need to learn how to communicate in Garmin. Because of my initial preferences, it made some strange routing choices. I'm going to study it. The bluetooth pairing to my phone appears to be working, but I haven't figured out how to take advantage of all of the features that are supposed to be available (music, traffic, weather, hands-free calling). You can use your phone for free. My Sena headset appears to be finicky and unreliable when it comes to pairing. I'll keep it and use it, but I'm not sure why I feel like I'm dealing with technology that's 20 years old nowadays. Surely, a company that makes glass cockpits for airplanes has the necessary expertise. what is the best way to create a user-friendly website? Is there any way to make a user-friendly GPS that works more like, say, Google Maps?.

For the price, this is a fantastic unit
5/5

The included equipment makes it simple to set up. I've put nearly 5,500 miles on it now, and it's still going strong. Last month, I tested it against Waze over 3,600 miles in WA, OR, and NV, and it performed admirably. It even outperformed Waze in central Oregon, saving me 1 mile. In comparison to Waze, it took me 5 hours to get to my destination. Garmin must have figured out Oregon by now. That in and of itself is incredible.

Basecamp still has the feel of a mid-90s program
4/5

So far, the headache has been typical Garmin. Basecamp still has the feel of a mid-90s program. Because Garmin 100% does not sell maps for Korea or Japan, I have spent 6 hours trying to load an OSM map on here. So. The world's largest GPS manufacturer does not even provide GPS maps for the world's third most populous country. The only option is to use OSM maps, but they aren't compatible with the Zumo. br>br>Creative+ paraphrase: 4 stars are now available. On this thing, I was finally able to get an OSM map to work. Still, I'm giving it a one-star rating because it was such a pain and because Basecamp is such a terrible program. It's not funny how difficult it is to create a custom route and then transfer it to your GPS. br>br>I've already taken a trip using my GPS. I used to own two older Zumos. This one is quite nice, to be honest. Touch is a good option for a water-resistant model. Even in the harshest sunlight, the screen is bright. Although not perfect, it is visible in direct sunlight, which is something that an off-brand GPS cannot do. This Zumo is quite small. Lighter. Yet it has a solid feel to it. Despite being water-resistant, the contacts on one of my models rusted. Another one that a friend uses is fine, but it's fat and bulky. They appear to have made significant improvements to the cradle and power connectors, as well as their ability to cover both the cradle and unit contacts. I have yet to put it through its paces in the rain. Only time will tell if this is true. br>br>Right now, my only gripe is most likely the price, but nothing else on the market comes close. So it's supply and demand; I've tried a few different Japanese models, and they're complete garbage in comparison to a Zumo. br>br>As well as basecamp. Garbage, garbage, garbage, garbage, garbage, garbage, garbage, garbage, garbage, garbage Garmin should be embarrassed that Basecamp is still not usable.
