Questions & Answers

My laptop is setup to monitor it only through a USB cable. Does it allow me to unplug the audible beeps? If I don't want it to beep at all, how can I have it run smoothly in my environment?

It did not come with an audible alarm when I bought BE850M2. The old units would make a noise once the electricity went off, but not the new ones. I think this is superb, by the way... You already know that the AC and fan went out, so you don't need an alarm to tell you that. Here is a question for you. The first time I have experienced this is with APC units and I wonder if OFF will now be the default? If so, that is indeed very good news indeed. Would it be possible to confirm if the new variety of the 600va has the alarm turned off by default? I need a smaller one. The 850 will be sent to me if the alarm is not off on the 600. Please accept my thanks!

Does the battery need to be replaced often?

The longest APC battery I have had lasted seven to eight years, the shortest was 13 months (12-month warranty, shocking!). Batteries from other vendors are not durable enough, so I purchased replacements from them. It turned out that Battery Plus had sold me 2 x SLA batteries taped together (just like in the picture) and they were not designed for back-up power, as the sales representative had claimed. They leaked, corroded the whole inside of my very expensive device! That was a bad decision for me! They said they had the APC batteries, but I found out that they didn't have them when I got to the store, and I would have to order them, so I tried their option and I will never shop at Batteries Plus again. The battery on one of my APC computers just died yesterday. Today is March 31, 2020, and the date I bought the unit was December 17, 2017. It takes an average of three years for a child to reach puberty. The complaint is not valid.

If the power is off, for how long is my system going to be powered?

In addition to my desktop computer, two monitors, and my modem/router, I plugged my UPS battery power into the power outlet. As a result, the power went out less than 20 minutes after it went out. There was no warning when the battery was about to go flat. During the 15 minutes it lasted, it just kept making that double beep, then everything just went dark. Not happy at all. The price you pay is the price you get.

Keep an eye on what unit is being evaluated
4/5

The 600 volt unit is shown here. There are many different sizes discussed in the reviews, and that leads to confusion. The 600 VA model is the subject of this review. The TV one came with a remote control, and I purchased the other one from Amazon One is a satellite receiver and the other is a computer for my wife.

I also own a Cyberpower 1500VA unit for my own hardware that I utilize for connecting a lot of external hard drives and other components.

The units work well for their intended purposes. Using a 32" LED TV, a wifi router, a 5 port switch, a Dish Satellite receiver / DVE, and an external (sleeping) HD on the DVR, I got a total of about 35 minutes of viewing time. I was able to get about 45 minutes on my wife's Celeron or Pentium Pro PC with a 22" LCD monitor. I live in the wilderness in New Mexico, where I have a lot of power problems. These units work well in this environment. The PowerChute software was not installed on the computer of my wife, and it was not installed on the TV/dish receiver either. Using the power button, one can mute the alarm by pushing and holding the button for some time. It is explained more or less clearly in the documents that come with the unit, though they are small and difficult to read.

The main problem with this unit is that you have to remove the battery before you can setup and use it. Make sure to pay attention when you remove it as the least intuitive way to put it back in is the most bizarre. I had two batteries so I was able to see how to put the first back in because I was more observant when I removed the second battery. Despite trying six different ways, it worked out the way I had not imagined. had never attempted it because I thought it would be totally wrong headed to route the wires the way they actually do.

There is no value in a warranty
3/5

In the event of damage to your attached equipment, don't expect compensation. Our company has purchased dozens of UPS units from APC over the years and has been generally satisfied with them, but in July we had an APC BE550G fail during a thunderstorm and damage a computer. Since the computer worked fine before the storm yet failed afterward, it is reasonable to assume it was damaged by a power surge.

We sent the UPS to APC for inspection, and they made a claim on our behalf. It is the end of October now. I finally got some sort of response from APC after about half a dozen phone calls to hound them for information. Our claim was denied by APC in part due to their assertion that the BE550G is fine. Do you really mean that? The UPS itself cannot be damaged by excess voltage, can it?

We have been thinking about switching to a different brand of UPS, and this is a good reason to.

Those were some great balls of fire
3/5

You may have seen Roman candles in houses before, but have you ever lit one? My experience today when I turned this unit on was this: a lot of smoke and fire came out of one of the outlets. To see where the fireball is coming from, I took the thing apart (see photo attached). Nevertheless, I'm not surprised the quality is poor on these APC units. Another unit that I had came with a faulty plug (BE500G) however. In checking the cord, I found damaged wires inside (see attached picture). I tried to swap it out, but it wouldn't connect. Hence, if you value your life and don't want your house to catch fire, I would recommend you find another UPS manufacturer, I wouldn't recommend the one I use!.

It would be nice to have a Mode/Mute button for the audio alarm
3/5

My battery backup unit arrived just now, and I am pleased to see that it functions well. It is unfair that for an APC brand battery backup system selling for $100+, this should come with a 30 cent toggle switch to mute the audio alarm when needed. In some situations, you know the power is off and are managing the situation well enough that you don't need another alarm creating a lot of chaos. I find it crazy that this rather expensive device does not allow the audio alarm to be muted, when a simple button would suffice. If I had known that it was missing such an obvious and simple feature, I would not have purchased it.

The doorstop probably makes a good door stopper
3/5

I have heard the long beep several times while I was in the basement (where my computer is). Every piece of equipment is turned off, and the computer did not shut down as it should have. It shows NO power interruption when my computer is turned off, yet the software does a self test - Result: "Unable to carry out a self test at this time"
As a UPS, this is LESS THAN USEFUL! A new attempt has been made for July 2020. You cannot plug anything into it, and it always emits a constant beeping noise. All of my devices went off while I worked on this review. The power is not on and there is no beep. I contacted customer support: no answer. It started getting slow again a month later, so I replaced it with a Cyberpower unit that actually works.
When I unplugged the APC unit, the computer shut down. It is still unclear whether APC will respond.
