Is there a similarity between the two endings? In some of the photographs, the slots on the outer top appear to be of varying widths. ?

It's the same thing. I don't need an adapter when using target disk mode on an old Mac because the cable orientation doesn't matter. I simply take the cable out of the box, plug it in, and it functions.
