Questions & Answers

Is it possible to connect my 2011 desktop Mac to my 2012 Macbook using this firewire cable? To pull files into the Macbook, you'll need to set your desktop to target mode. ?

Yes, if your two devices support 800IEEE, which I am confident they do. I'm downloading it to MyPassport Studio on my MACBOOK PRO. It performs admirably. Thank you for your interest.

Is it possible to transfer data from an old Macbook (2007) to a new Macbook Pro (2010) using this cable alone?

Yes, I believe that is correct. It worked perfectly for transferring files from my old iMac to my Macbook Pro. I can't speak to the product's durability because I've only used it once, but it allowed for a quick transfer time with no issues. Although I don't believe you'll require an adapter, I did use the one that came with my MacBook Pro.

Is it possible to connect a 2009 mac pro desk top to a 2008 imac and use the imac as a monitor to display what's on the mac pro using this firewire 800 cable?

This is for using another laptop or Mac mini as an external hard drive in Target mode; to view as a monitor, you'll need to use the thunderbolt port, which is only for video output on older models. Visit the Apple forums for more information.

I was let down
3/5

I prefer to purchase inexpensive cables from Amazon because they perform indistinguishably from more expensive cables. Saving money on something that does the same thing appeals to me. This cable, on the other hand, was a letdown. For one thing, rather than being black as shown in the picture, the cable that arrived was clear. I like how the product I get matches what is shown on the website. But the real issue I had with it was that it caused my Macbook Pro to almost short out as soon as I plugged it in. My battery was completely depleted when it turned off. It was the strangest thing that had ever happened to me. So, along with plugging my Macbook into the charger, I tried to transfer data with the cable once more. It's not going to happen. My computer shut down again after I jiggled the cable to see what would happen. Needless to say, I didn't want to risk further damage to my computer, so I unplugged it right away. I turned the power back on after disconnecting the cable, and everything was fine again. I'm not sure what caused it, but I didn't want to use that cable any longer because my Mac had been working fine previously. I'm not sure if I just got a bad cable or if that's the case with all of them. Fortunately, Amazon has a great return policy, so I made sure to return this item as soon as possible.

I bought a similar cable for $35 from a retail store because I needed one right away to connect an interface to my computer
4/5

I had no problems with the cable I bought. Then I went online and bought it for less than ten dollars. I removed the $35 cable and replaced it with the Tripp one as soon as it arrived. The interface's connection to the computer was of the same high quality as the more expensive one. br>br>Needless to say, I packed up the $35 one, placed it in its original packaging, and returned it to the store with the receipt for a refund. There was no way I could justify paying more than THREE TIMES the price for the same cable. I would recommend this cable because it is still in good working order. br>br>If you don't have to, don't pay more than you should. These cords are in excellent condition.

It's a good deal and it works well
5/5

This cord was purchased to connect a new 1TB Western Digital external drive to my old Mac G5 tower. I needed to switch from Firewire 800 (WD drive) to Firewire 400 (Mac). (Of course, the drive runs at a slower speed; all I have to do is upgrade the cord if I want to use it on a computer that supports Firewire 800. ) This cord works perfectly, and I'm glad it's 6' long because it allows me to move it away from my work area and free up some desk space. I now have five external drives on my desk, and the cords are starting to get a little tangled, so having one that's this long is extremely beneficial. br>br>I have no idea about the technical quality of cords, but this one works, it's half the price (or less) of other brands, and there are a lot of other things I'd rather spend my money on than cords.

Switched Tripp Lite cables should be avoided at all costs
3/5

Cablemart sent me a generic Firewire 800 cable instead of the Tripp Lite cables I had ordered. After I filed a complaint, Cablemart promptly refunded my money and allowed me to keep the generic cable; they explained that their warehouse carries both cables and that when the Tripp Lite was unavailable, the warehouse sent me the generic one without mentioning the switch. But I can't help but wonder if a lot of people aren't aware of the switch when it comes to their orders. Although the generic cable I was given appears to be slightly loose in the socket, it doesn't drop the Firewire connection very often as long as I don't move or shake the computer too much. I gave this product three stars because I wanted to comment about my experience without overly downgrading Tripp Lite at the same time.

This was my first Firewire cord, and I suspect many of the positive reviewers have had similar experiences
3/5

Like them, I was initially very pleased with this cord because it worked well and was inexpensive. However, despite pushing the cord as far as it would go, I noticed that the 9 pin connector was always very loose and never "clicked" in place. "Woah, Firewire has a terrible connector design," I thought at first. "br>br>However, after purchasing a new Firewire cable from a more reputable source (LaCie), I discovered that Firewire cables are actually very secure! There's just something about the design of these cords that doesn't make sense! As far as I can tell, the connector on the 800 end of these cables is a little too short, so they can't be inserted far enough to engage the locking mechanism (i. e. the 'click' you get when you plug in a USB cable (or, as it turns out, a better-made Firewire cable). As a result, I advise users to keep a safe distance from these cables. Sure, they're inexpensive, but if you disconnect your cable without properly unmounting your external drive, your hard drive is likely to become corrupted. Investing in high-quality cables is well worth it. Your data is far more valuable than the few dollars you'll save by using a low-cost service. company that provides cable.

It lasted for two years
4/5

This cable is loosely plugged into the MBP's firewire port. It had been working for about two years when it suddenly stopped. That isn't particularly good for a low-stress cable application. However, the price is reasonable.

I'm using it to connect my older Pro Tools digi rack 2 interface audio to an imac and haven't had any problems with audio or data.

a convertor On occasion
3/5

Not sure. There could be a variety of problems, so I downloaded the firmware update for my WD My Book. It worked for a while, but then Windows 7 lost track of it. Changed the driver to "legacy" as recommended by the Win 7 folks, and it worked for a while before failing. The cable seemed to be of good quality. The ends slid into place with a satisfying click. I believe the issue is a firewire 800 to esata/1394a conversion. It was worth a shot for the price. The transfer rates weren't particularly impressive, nor were they significantly better than USB. I'd have to buy a firewire 800 card and then use the cable in the end, which isn't worth it on my budget.
