The cable should work with any camcorder that has a standard IEEE1394 port for 4 pin connections. Other customers have told us that the IEEE port on their camcorder (of a different model) is too small for the 4 pin cable. If you can wiggle it in, do so gently; otherwise, you may need to contact Sony to see if they have a cable of their own.
You might want to take a look at this ASIN: If your new and old imacs both have firewire ports, you can connect them with a 9 pin to 9 pin firewire cable. If your new imac does not have a firewire port, you'll need a thunderbolt to firewire adapter.
You can also use QuickTime, which is also included for free on your Mac, in addition to iMovie. If you're just doing a simple import and don't plan on doing any further editing, I'd go with the latter for the sake of simplicity, as iMovie can be intimidating if you're not familiar with it.

If you have a 2010 MacBook Pro with 9 pin firewire input and a Sony Digital 8 Camcorder with ilink 4 pin firewire, this cord is a must-have. It saves so much time, transfers at the highest quality from tape, and most importantly, separates into different clips and date stamps them if you use iMovie on Mac. All you have to do is press the import button in iMovie, and it will take care of the rest. This is something that other people don't do. I tried Evgato Video Capture and Transfer, which captures and transfers the entire tape as a single large clip at VHS quality. Also, the clips have no date stamp. If you have a newer MacBook Pro, you will only need to purchase one or two adapters, depending on the year of your MacBook. Adapters can be found on Amazon. Yes, it works with those other two extremely expensive Apple brand connectors to convert from FireWire to USBC on modern Macs. br>br>At the end of the day, the price was a pain, but the videos recovered from the camera made up for it.
