This stand is very heavy. It may last through a nuclear explosion. However, the clamp that mounts to the top of the desk is damaged at a greater than 90 degree angle, so it does not work perfectly flush on top of the desk or along the sides or back. Even though it is true that this is not the worst of the problems, it is still significant. It is the lack of levelness of the ground on which you place your laptop that is the biggest problem. It's badly leaning to one side. Which wouldn't be a problem if your head was permanently tilted sideways, but my osteoarthritis and OCD prevent me from using it that way. There is also a lot of wobble on the base of the laptop. I expect better quality for the almost $60 price tag on this item. You might be able to fix all of these problems if you have the tools and equipment, but the price tag is pretty high. I have to return it. I apologize for the inconvenience.
As for the grommet, I used one of the cup holders in the console beside my recliner and put it through it. To do so, I removed the plastic part of the cup holder, cut a slit through the fabric, and inserted the bottom plate, which had already been attached to the pole, through the cut. Using the pole, I slid it onto the top of the cup holder by pulling it up and rotating it. My problem was that I had to turn the console over and detach the fabric on the bottom of the console to tighten down the bolt and I could have used a second person to hold the pole in place, but I managed to get it to tighten. You can still use the cup holder next to this one without any problems. It appears to be very sturdy and completely adjustable. As of right now, I am extremely happy with the end result! I will give it time to hold up, but so far I am delighted.
