You won't be able to use it unless you have an internal flash.
Hi Jeff, I used a Nikon Coolpix as a slave to fire both Ikelite strobes. Flash sensors are located along the arm of each strobe and work to fire the strobes from your camera's internal flash. I hope this information is useful.
The strobe can be used up to 300 feet below the surface. I've used the strobe on several dives down to 150 feet, as well as a few deeper dives.

It's not a good idea to do that! This light isn't quite what it appears to be. The mounting tray that comes with the package must be used. The strobe and sensor cannot be detached and used with other Ikelite mounts. The arm is made up of a single piece that has been molded. The diffuser is a complete waste of time. It doesn't stay put; the tab that was supposed to keep it in place broke after the second dive, and there's no lanyard included to keep it from floating away. The mounting tray is made entirely of plastic and is not particularly stable. Every time I picked it up, I was convinced I was going to break the light off the end. I would buy the lights that fit on their regular quick release handles (singles or dual with the silver button at the top) if I were to buy Ikelite again (which I would not). Ikelite's refusal to let you easily upgrade to other trays and lights strikes me as odd.
I've been scuba diving for over 20 years and have used a variety of underwater cameras and strobes. Sea Life strobes were the most recent one I had, and they were terrible. After purchasing the Ikelite strobe, I've found it to be the easiest to use and the best underwater strobe I've ever used.
A single flash can result in a single side being overexposed, as well as hot spots. I should have bought a double flash instead of a diffuser because it only lasted four days. The flash was frequently overpowered, and even when turned down, it would frequently wash out the image, even when aimed away from the subject.
This was purchased in conjunction with the housing. It's simple to put together and adds the necessary light for better photos. I've only used it a few times in murky ocean water, so I'll need more opportunities and practice to progress from good to great photos.
For Cannon Cameras, this is a fantastic flash.
My new undersea light is fantastic. It's a lot of fun for me to work on.
This AF35 will never work after a single dive. I'd replaced the batteries. br> However, there are no electric-powered vehicles available. There is no charge, and there is no flush.
I've done around 30 dives with the AF35. In Okinawa's blue waters, it performs admirably for macro photography.
