Is there a female 1/4" thread on the bottom of this item? Are there any pictures to help me understand?

In short, yes. An insert that comes with it has to be inserted (which I didn't do at first), and once that is in, the tripod shoe can be attached as it is.

Are the two arms long enough to be joined together so that they are 57 cm long? In the pictures it appears as though this is the case, but I don't think it works with the hardware supplied. ?

Both arms can be used as one arm if connected together. The screw hole on the feet is 3/8" wide, and the top thread can be changed from 1/4" to 3/8" wide according to your installation instructions. Included in the package is a screw adapter of 3/8" thread size. Once you have two or more arms, you can link them together to become one.

It is possible to remove the bottom mounting base so that the tripod can be used with an existing one that has quick release flip-up legs How do you adjust the tripod legs' height using knobs (locks)?

There is no need to remove the shoe however, a quick release shoe can be attached to it.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of removing the 1/4 threaded pieces on either end?

There is no way to remove the 1/4 threaded pieces at each end

bought one of these and it was exactly what I wanted and it is really nice. This product has the number The C282 code. After a while, I returned to Amazon to order another one, clicking on the link from my past orders to the item, and I then chose the same carbon fiber version without much thought. Having gone through all that again this time, I was rewarded with It was probably my fault for failing to notice the difference in product number. It wasn't what I had in mind.
