Theoretically, this is a good idea. On paper, the plan sounds good, but in practice Despite what the pictures show, they can be misleading. With the foot closer to the barrel, it is much easier to maintain a good grip. There is not really a way for the ring to be fastened in a way that wouldn't cause it to slip off and get wedged between the lens and the barrel, possibly.
