It can burn (and play) CDs and DVDs (both dual layer and single layer). I had my first one burnt out the day before yesterday). DVD R SL/DL, DVD RW/- is written on the box. RW, DVD- RAM, CD- R/RW. I hope this has been of assistance.
I apologize for being so late in responding to this question, but I would like to offer my assistance to anyone who is experiencing this issue. Windows 8 is the latest operating system from Microsoft. Upgrade to Windows 10 now! 1 is the steaming pile of crap here, not the device!
One USB port is all that is required.

in agreement with Here's the bottom line, though: br>br>This unit is plug and play, which means it doesn't require any setup. (Note: It is not necessary to use the software CD that comes with it. It's just a free media suite. ) The issue is that when a BLANK disc is inserted, the drive does not appear in Finder, which is understandably confusing. (Normally, a disc containing content appears. ) )br>br>Going to About This Mac is one way to see if it's recognized. Storage. To write a file to a blank disc, follow these steps: br>br> Control- br>br>NOTE: If you right-click your file and choose Burn "your_file" to Disc, a popup box should appear with the option to choose your external drive. br>br> External optical drives are not supported by Samsung anymore. There is no technical support, and no warranty claims can be made through the manufacturer.
I bought it because the new Macbook Pros don't come with hard drives, and it's worked out great as a stand-in. I primarily use it to watch DVDs and burn music CDs, and it performs admirably in both capacities. br>br>I deducted a star because the tray does not open far enough for the entire disk to be outside of the player when inserting or removing a disk. As a result, you must tilt the disk in place before snapping it into place, all while avoiding scratching it. It's not difficult, but it appears to be a problem that could have been avoided.
Despite the fact that I bought this unit in June 2018 and have had it for two months, I have only used it three times, and the third time appears to be the charm. The drive opens and accepts the disc, but once it's in, I hear it spin up and hesitate, spin up and hesitate, spin up and hesitate, until it finally stops and ejects the disc. As a result, a 300 error code is displayed. Unfortunately, I am outside of Amazon's return window, so I'll have to chalk this one up to a lesson learned. This has happened with multiple dvds of varying condition, and the result is identical each time. Unfortunately, I am a fan of LG products and would normally not be swayed by a few negative reviews, but I will think twice about purchasing one of their products in the future.
This is a fantastic little CD/DVD external player that connects to my Mac via USB. My Mac's driver isn't working, so I can't listen to or import music from CDs or watch DVDs. I bought it, plugged it into my computer, and presto! This small external device allows me to play CDs and watch DVDs on my computer. br>br>However, why do I only give it four stars? Because I'm on my third external drive, and the others have all failed or worn out for various reasons. It appears to last less than a year before I begin to have problems. While the price is closer to $30, it should not exceed $20. It gets the job done, but it isn't long enough.
This works well with my HP spectre, which runs Windows 10. I connect the dvd to a usb hub that is connected to my laptop. It's worth noting that purchasing this drive on its own will not allow you to watch DVDs automatically. To watch DVDs, you'll still need to get some free software. Use Google to look for the software.
I needed a way to burn and read discs after having problems with my desktop's internal DVD burner. So, you might wonder, why not just replace the internal DVD burner? Why is that? Because there isn't anything wrong with it. It's a lengthy and convoluted tale. Let's put that aside and talk about the burner. Only one USB slot is required, as long as your USB slot can supply enough power, which mine does. The portable devices with two USB ports, one of which is pigtailed to the other, are for the rare occasions when that is required for that device; however, this does not imply that you will always require it. The USB cable could be a little longer, though. It measures approximately 2 feet in length. Mini- On the device's end, there's a USB port. br>br>Moving on, instead of slot loading, it uses a tray. I've never been a big fan of slot loaders. The tray is similar to what you'd find on a laptop, with the disc snapping into place, which makes sense given the device's slim profile. The burn times are comparable to what I would get from my internal burner: 3GB in about 10 minutes, a little more than 20 minutes if I include the verify step, which is usually a good idea. br>br>Anyone interested in purchasing this to use as a DVD player for their television; DON'T! That isn't what it was designed for. It's designed to work with a computer rather than a television. While I am confident that it will work with some TVs, this does not guarantee that it will work with all of them. If you want a mini DVD player for your TV, look for one that is specifically designed for that purpose. I'm sure it works fine on most LG TVs, but I can't get to the ports of my old LG LCD TV to see if it works with it. LG's website lists this as "TV Connectivity," which is a little misleading because it's just a USB device. I'm sure it works fine on most LG TVs, but I can't get to the ports of my old LG LCD TV to see if it works with it. My Samsung doesn't work, but that's more due to the TV than the burner. My point is that you should not dismiss any star(s) simply because they do not appear on your television. br>br>I'd also like people to stop giving it a bad review because they "can't find drivers for it" and "the installation CD. " "There Are No Drivers For This Device! This is just a plug-and-play device!" play. The "installation CD" is used to set up the Cyberlink free software, which is completely optional. It's not a matter of missing drivers if you're having trouble getting this to work. I've never known an optical drive that needed drivers to work, not even USB, since Windows 95. If you're using a Mac, Linux, or Windows XP or later, all you have to do is plug it in. play. When it comes to Cyberlink software, br>br> People have been known to knock off celebrities as a result of it. For those who require such services, Cyberlink software is available. If you can't get the software to work for whatever reason, contact the company and file a complaint. It's LG's or the drives' fault, so give the product a rating rather than the optional software.
I've never wished for the ability to give 0 stars as much as I do right now. This is a complete nightmare. Many CDs and audiobooks on CD do not allow it to read the last track. When I tried to put a CD into my MP3 player, it got stuck trying to read the last track and made a very annoying noise that wouldn't stop until I unplugged the damn thing. Its only redeeming feature is that it has completely ceased to function - Now I'll be able to purchase something that actually works! This piece of garbage should be avoided at all costs.
