The tray, Dustin, is only for shipping purposes. Depending on how often you use them, they might work for a while. You will not be disappointed with these tools, especially for the price.
About a year ago, I purchased the 81003 gearwrench locking extensions. There isn't a case included. It was packaged in a difficult-to-open clear plastic heat-sealed bag. br>The extensions they sent were not the same as what was advertised. The item they sent has a large diameter ring on one end that can be locked and unlocked. It has a larger diameter than the wrench end, which defeats the purpose of buying a 1/4 diameter extension in the first place: to fit into tight spaces. I attempted to obtain a refund but received no response. Thank you, Pete.
I got the new design in mid-December 2014, so I'm guessing that's what you'll get as well.

The item's picture does not correspond to the item that was delivered. A set similar to the one pictured isn't even made by Gearwrench, according to the manufacturer's website. Not any longer, at least.
I began using them at work a few weeks after receiving them and have had no problems thus far. The length combinations are fantastic. It's difficult to beat the price for what it provides. A 2" adapter is extremely useful but can be difficult to come by on its own. It would be preferable if the knurled portions were closer to the ratchet end, allowing the finger to reach it without having to change positions. The socket is well held by the ends. No drops. This is an excellent set to have if you work in aviation.
These are recommended by me as a professional mechanic. They've never given me any problems. They easily outperform Craftsman, are on par with Cornwell and Mac, and only win by a hair over Snap On due to their sharper (grippier) knurling. Compare this price to what they're asking for the truck. Your wallet will thank you if you purchase these.
If you have valid sockets, they will be locked. So, here's how it works. If you have harbor freight sockets, these won't hold them in place very well. They are simple to remove. If you have genuine sockets, they will lock in place perfectly and cannot be removed. On my phone, I have a snap- I'd post a picture if I wasn't so lazy, but I got a different set of extensions than the ones pictured, and it has a sleeve to unlock the socket, which is awesome. Today, I used it several times and it was fantastic.
The socket won't get stuck inside because they're fixed, and I was able to remove a rusted spark plug with ease. It would have been stuck if I had used a standard spark plug tool. I'll only use this tool to change my plugs, and the different sizes are useful for different parts of the engine bay.
These are the ones I use whenever I need quarter inch. to tools. I like the case because you can take it apart and put it in your drawer, keeping everything organized. Extremely durable and high-quality. It's nice to have it in the case in the drawer because it's always organized and you know if it's missing because you only have to wipe it down once. br>It's nice to have it in the case in the drawer because it's always organized and you know if it's missing because you only have to wipe it down once. When you're in a bind, the various sizes are extremely useful.
Not the cheapest, but a well-made, long-lasting tool is worth the extra cost. My only criticism is that it is not manufactured in the United States. Boo! br>br>An added bonus is the "grip hashing" on the extension shafts, which helps with finger grip when starting threads by rotating the extension by hand. This is a very useful feature!.
I would have given it a five star rating if I could. It's not in the picture. I purchased these extensions under the impression that I would receive exactly what was shown in the picture. I was instead given an extension with a large lock collar. Not the small button depicted in the images. It would have been a five-star review if it weren't for the fact that.
