So I tried again as I kept having coolant pushed into the overflow bottle. Again, I used the radiator adapter that came with the radiator filing funnel from Lisle. Due to the way that the funnel adapter sits several inches above the radiator lip, I was able to tell where the tool seals. The yellow color in my test fluid this time was not normal. The end result is a poor product that does not work well for my use case. I was hoping it to be the definitive test, but clearly it isn't. As much as I like Lisle, I do hope that its quality control gets in line. There is no sense in selling a defective product when the problem has been brought to it multiple times already.

This was found on Amazon, so I'm glad. While I have not opened the bottle yet, if it works as well as the stuff that came with my combustion leak kit (which I expect it will, since the bottles are identical), then it will work just as well and at half the price of ordering a replacement from a Test your results after each step. As a result, the absence of any color change indicates that there is no combustion leak present. To check, inhale into the tube and see if the CO2 in your breath is enough to turn the blue green. Creating your own tester is easy. I did find it a little difficult to find materials that provided a vacuum, so you could certainly make your own tester as long as you could find some materials that provided a vacuum. Also, it does not have to be a perfect vacuum. Be sure to keep the tank of test fluid away from the one that contains coolant. Didn't pay attention to the details and was lazy in the process. I had to aerate the tube the first time I set it up because the pump sucked in some coolant. The radiator can be easily fixed by draining a few inches to half of the coolant. The cost of diagnosing a blown head gasket was lower than paying a shop to do that. In my area, the rates for shops are between 150 and 200 USD Having saved 200 hours, I saved a lot of money.

This product lived up to its promise. I got to use it. It worked just like it should. I recommend disconnecting the vacuum line from the fluid tank when it's full and in use. When an engine is running, the fluid will suck in. Wear eye protection and be sure you get a good seal on the radiator when doing the test.

It's possible to have combustion gas leaking into the coolant system due to gasket problems). Using this tester was a lot of fun! I was able to save a lot of money this way. Basically, the only challenge I had was keeping the hot coolant from rising too much into the tester (which would affect the color), which I solved by poking my thumb in the top of the radiator, which lowered the coolant level a bit, which made me feel much better. Wearing a rubber glove helps cool the hands down when it's hot. A head gasket leak was not found in the engine after all, according to the tester. It was a mistake on the mechanic's part. An improper thermostat was installed by the mechanic, causing it to open at too high temperatures. A solution has been found for the problem.
