Questions & Answers

There are four dies included in the description, which reads "Includes four dies.". There are six and eight mm in the 75, 6 and 10 mm range." Do the 4504s work only with metric tubing or can they also be used with 3/16 tubing?

The conversion rule would be 3/16 to 4 for 3/16 tubing, so I used it for 3/16 tubing. Inches 76

Is this tool able to create flares for single flares as well?

There is a specialty tool for making bubble flares and it is not the same as a drill bit

Rather than looking like a bubble flare, the top of the flare seems more like a 45. Does anyone else have this problem?

In the flare and flaring tools world, there are several different types. Bubble flares produce what looks like a flattened out balloon at the end of the flare if they are With the double flare, you just do a 60 degree flare with a 45 degree back flare The overfold adds extra resistance to pulling out. Both of those I have done and have not had issues like

Is it possible to use it with stainless steel brake lines?

This is something I have never done and would not recommend. The steel tubing may be OK if it is softer. The technology I use is Cu-based I have never used Ni tubing before, so I cannot comment from personal My opinion is (and this is my prejudice) A tool made of steel deserves to be on top of the line.

Using a double gives you enough leverage to do without this tool
5/5

If you have a double flare tool, you can get by without this tool The following are the steps for making bubble flares The simplest tool will work 97% of the time, but its more convenient if it's the right one. The tool works flawlessly, and bubble flares are so much easier to make than double flares. As for the fittings to my calipers, they had to be bubble flares, but for the unions I installed where the lines were cut, I began with double flares and had a hard time You can use the relevant union or fitting for every fitting and all fittings should be bubble flared. There is the possibility your car has a manufacturer specific fitting which would require an adapter to connect it to a bubble flare. As such, you will need an adapter.

That was all that was needed
4/5

Let me tell you what I can I was able to do it. One flare failed because I did not tighten the wing nut enough to prevent the line from sliding. I performed 14 flares without a hitch. I wasn't able to find a leak once all was done. Seven new factory replacement lines were done, rerouting them exactly how the originals were. This was the poly-script I used 3/16" line, dark green coating (the stuff that sticks to the track). This is what I do. With my bench grinder, I shaped the shape of the O using a cut line. I'd like to cut off at this point. On the I, I used a chamfering tool to do a break at the edge. My next step was to spread oil on the included die and then proceed Once I had finished, I took the flared area back to the bench grinder, only this time I used a fiber type buffing wheel to remove the poly coating from the There was just something about the green stuff that was streaked partially through the flared face that I didn't like. Throughout the buffing process, I never applied any force to the To remove the orange streaks, apply just a little bit of bleach. There were some issues with the clamping process such as marring the surface of the non-porous material It's not easy if there's a flared area of the brake line and I don't know how you'd be able to hold it without it. ***** It did not perform as well as a $350 tool did, which is the only reason it didn't get 5 stars. You now know what I mean. If I had to buy it again, I would.

I am very pleased with the quality of this product
5/5

I was far more impressed than I had anticipated. There is no comparison with the OEM brake flaring tool from autozone. I was able to make my first excellent bubble flare after using it for the first time. Additionally, I feel that I would be able to do an equally good job using this tool for hundreds of additional flares, but I hope that I will not A brake job on one of my cars is one of my least favorite tasks - I loathe it. I would have to put muffler work right up there with it. Now, not only do I look forward to my next brake job or at the very least, do not dread it so much, I have a 25 foot roll of coated brake tube. The thing I appreciate the most is the fact that the flaring bits screw into the press so that they do not tip to one side, which basically ensures an even flare. Also, the bits seem to be a lot more durable than other systems I have seen. This is a very different product than the OEM product I rented, since I think it would be very difficult to break the pieces. I found it to be way too expensive in terms of time and frustration even when it was free. A second reason I think the pipe press is good is that it clamps firmly and does not distort the brake pipe, again in sharp contrast to the OEM product At least with my hands, the OEM system did really damage to my brake pipe.

It is a little odd that this system is metric rather than fractional inches but I checked with a tape measure and the 4-inch specs match up. The diameter of 75 mm is about the same as the diameter of The other sizes, I assume, have the same equivalents in inch fractions, although personally I have never had to deal with anything except 3/16" brake tubes. In my opinion, OTC really hit one out of the park with their 4504 Stinger ISO Bubble Flaring Tool Kit and I couldn't be happier with it. Its quality is what sets it apart from the competition.

The quality of this product is disappointing
3/5

It is possible that I was naive to expect this to be a decent tool even though it was made in the USA and had an overall good reputation. Because I agree with all of the 3 star and lower reviews about the quality of this flaring tool, I should have paid more attention to them. This is definitely not a good idea. My impression is that it's a cheap Chinese tool from Harbor Freight that you would expect a cheap Chinese tool to be of similar quality to. In fact, I was thinking it might be a Chinese counterfeit rather than the authentic OTC product. It's possible those who have had success with it have hit a lucky streak because they've used the right combination of hits Quality assurance is not taken care of. I found that some tools are okay, but other tools (like mine) have problems. After making several bad flares, I was able to work out that the jaws of the flaring tool (the part with the screw) were the source of most of the problem. As a result, they are neither flat nor straight and, as a consequence, cause the tool to cock slightly to the side when firmly screwed down. If this is not done carefully and lucky (and or very, very carefully), the flare will be lopsided. Those tools have machined jaws, judging by the images the company provided for its higher priced flaring tools. It is very difficult to crank down a tool that is in a "as cast" condition and have a flat working surface on the jaws, so it is very challenging to make a good flare with it. The only recommendation I have for saving the extra money is to upgrade to a better tool, as several other reviewers indicated. There is no point in getting aggravated over this one.

I really like how this works
5/5

Presented in an easy-to-use manner This was easy to figure out after just a few minutes. I found the instructions to be not great, but they were detailed enough for me to do an excellent flare after my first attempt. Before I actually did the flares on the vehicle, I practiced taking a short piece of 3/16" brake line and bending it towards Each of the four corners took 5 minutes to flare, and the flaring itself took about 10 minutes Time spent per minute is 10 minutes. A large part of the time spent on this task involved moving the brake lines to a place where I could use the flare tool. This was due to both the vehicle design and where the brake The new lines didn't leak after installation - I got it done the first time! The fact that it is so good tells me this tool is excellent.
