Please keep in mind: br>br> To compress the steering lock plate, you'll need a special tool or some ingenuity! The column nut, a small washer, a large washer, and two sockets were all used. (See photo)br>br>I also took pictures to keep track of where the parts were located and how many there were. But, wow, it works great once the ignition lock is installed and everything is put back together!.
My 1980 Jeep CJ-70's ignition switch was worn out and needed to be replaced. Yes, my AMC Jeep CJ came equipped with a factory-installed GM tilt steering column. My jeep was vulnerable to theft because the old switch could be turned without a key. This part was a perfect fit, and my car is now as safe as it was when it was new. I'd buy this product again, and I'm likely to do so because the ignition switch on my 1987 Chevy pickup needs to be replaced. Because the new unit and freshly cut keys made it a little difficult to operate, I lubricated the tumblers inside the lock. Nothing that can't be fixed with practice and time.
Since the CJ lock cylinders changed in the early 1980s, I did a lot of research to make sure I was getting the right part. This was a perfect match for my 1985 Jeep CHJ-80. 7, instead of using a clip, a bolt is used to secure the cylinder in the column. I was able to change this out in about an hour after watching a video online on installation. To do the job yourself, you'll need to pull the steering wheel, so you'll need a puller.
The Chevy K1500 steering column is a pain to disassemble in order to reach the lock cylinder, but once you've done so, installation is a breeze. Before you begin, make sure you have a steering wheel puller kit, which you can borrow from O'Reiley's or Autozone. It makes life a whole lot easier. The cylinder and key appear to be of good workmanship. It took 30 minutes to complete the job. minutes and saved $225 compared to the local shop and $700 compared to the dealer.
When installed in a 1985 Chevy K10, it was a perfect fit.
In a 1991 GMC S15 Sonoma, I replaced the OE cylinder. It's a cinch to use.
Fits my 90 yj as expected; I had to remove the steering wheel to remove the screw that held it in place; removing and replacing the steering wheel took 1 hour; replacing the cylinder took 1 minute.
It was relatively simple to install and resolved my ignition switch issues.
