Why is it necessary to plug in this gas stovetop? Isn't natural gas or propane the only fuel sources?

I believe that plug-in is only used at the time of ignition. It does, in fact, run on natural gas or propane.

In the United States, connecting to a propane tank did not work. We don't have a connection pipe here, and an adaptor isn't available.
